Pro Logic II attempts to turn a two channel (or 4 channel) source material into a 5 channel surround sound effect. It aims to make non-DD and DTS sources sound more like DD and DTS.

DD and DTS are already true, discrete 5.1 sources.

Therefore Pro Logic II doesn't really benefit over DD and DTS as it's completely different. It does (or should) provide benefits over stereo or 'vanilla' Pro Logic, assuming you have 5 speakers...

Dolby Digital & DTS are both "digital formats" and as such are only available via digital sources - primarily DVD but also to an extent via Sky Digital (if you have the relevant hardware). The sound is encoded to include 5, or 6 discrete channels (add one more to include the sub!) each of which is independant from the others (i.e you can have a sound coming from the rear left speaker, which doesn't come from any of the others) - Does that make sense?

Pro Logic 2 on the other hand, works off of an analogue source (like a regular Sky transmission, or a Video). It works by taking a bog standard stereo signal, and adapting it to make it sound like a DD, or DTS type of surround sound - it can send certain sounds to certain speakers by examining the incoming sound and determining what should go where. In theory PLII enables you to have DVD type sound when watching non Digital Sources. In reality it's not quite as good, but certainly far more effective than conventional Stereo, or Pro Logic.

Can i just add one more minor point for clarification to Blighty Boy:

PLII is not an alternative to DD or DTS. If you are watching a digital source (e.g. DVD) you should use DD or DTS. If you are watching a non-digital source (e.g. anologue terrestial TV programme) then use PLII to give a DD "effect".

So a BBC movie for example cannot use DD or DTS, but you can make it sound that way by using PLII

Its not wether the signal is digital or not, its if its 2 channel or not. DD 2.0 is digital, but you still should perform PL2 on it.

So does the original content have to be recorded in PL2 or does it make its own mind up from an original PL source

    Thanks for your replys BTW

It is possible to encode for PL2, Gamecubes do this to give surround sound.
However PL2 should extract a better version of any PL mix in Cinema mode, and in Music mode does a fairly good job with 2 channel stereo.
