On BBC 4 ...nearly over unfortunately.

Read the books ...ignored the TV series as some hokey BBC drama...

...it is hoakey...its also utterly brilliant...words fail me. If you've never seen this ...you've seen nothing.

One of the best dramas the BBC has ever made IMHO.

Bought it on DVD a while ago, brilliant series. Inspired casting and direction.

I was shown this at school as part of our Latin course. Saw the whole series as a 17 / 18 yr old (a while back now), thought it was great back then - saw it was on but like a fool ignored it!!

One of the truly great series that the BBC have made over the years. I'm surprised that they didn't hold off on the repeats of it till the second series of Rome and combined them together.

I enjoyed it back in the 70s. Decided to have a go at watching it again, although I was afraid it might be too dated. Turns out, yes, it is a bit dated, and the acting from some of the lesser characters is pretty ropey (especially the children), but the main actors are brilliant. After a slow couple of episodes at the start, I've been enjoying the rest very much. I'd forgotten how comedic it is. My memory was of it being more serious and worthy.

By the way, I'd also forgotten that Jean Luc Picard was in it. ;)

Jean Luc Picard doesn't play any part, but Patrick Stewart plays Sejanus, who I seem to remember is a "policeman".

King Theoden was in it too. ;)

(Bernard Hill, who played Theoden in LOTR, was a Roman soldier in one of the later episodes.)
