To begin, my room is on the small size, It’s approx 15.5’ x 11.5’. Some may think well that’s more of a medium size room to me and it may well be, so I’d probably say it’s more smallish to medium rather than a ‘small’ room. I know it’s very far from perfect due to the size alone.

It’s not a daily room but used for movie watching and music listening. As such, it doesn’t have the normal fire surround and radiators etc but does have a window and patio doors.

I’m kind of setting the scene a little here as this is part of the information that needs submitting to the company, in this case I used Acoustic Foam & Low Frequency Sound Absorption Specialists
Lots of other stuff needs entering into the online form as those that have done it will know. I’m really quite impressed with the speed of response as I only sent the info a few days ago and the reply has come back today.
And I have to say that I did have a little chuckle to myself. To say again, the size of the room is totally against me. . . big time, but I already knew this.

The amount of treatment suggested is, for me, far from practical. I’d probably only have half of the room size left. The thing that really made me chuckle though is that they hoped I didn’t have any subwoofers in the room  What . . . I can’t have any Subs :(

So, I’m going to sell all my kit and start again with something more sensible for the room. Did I say that out loud  I’m not holding my breath on that one ;)

The company are great and I’m sure will be a real benefit to those that can use their services and/or advice or any combination of. For those that have ‘normal’ rooms, I wouldn’t bother filling in the analysis form, I’ll just tell you now - your room is crap :p
For those that have a substantial room or space, I’d say go for it and use their expertise.

I doubt it’ll stop me from filling the room with big bad ass speakers and subs though :D

But what are they trying to create? A room with a single optimised listening position or a room that sounds nice pretty much wherever you sit?

Trying to completely deaden a room is not necessarily going to make the room sound any better. Studio control rooms are often a little more lively and film mixing suites are not usually heavily treated either, - unless there's a really serious acoustic issue as they are seeking to emulate a typical listening environment.

Creating some corner bass traps can work wonders - and an Antimode or Behringer Feedback destroyer can apply some serious correction to the sub as well. Surround sound to my ears sounds better with a bit of space, being less closed in and more encompassing.

Maybe avoid the "Big Ass" speakers - which might not have the space to sing and go with some quality shelf mounted and a couple of 10" or 12" subs pulled away from the corners. If you want to add bass weight, consider acoustic transducer in the seating. This will all give you controlled, deep bass without it getting boomy!

...and of course, sit back and enjoy the music :)

I’ve got Bookshelf speakers as it is and I’m not having any of those under the seat wobbly type things, they’re just not for me.

I’ve just ordered 5 Super King Size Mattresses. I just need to figure out how to fix the ceiling one.

You're a sound engineer, aren't you?

You obviously don’t know dodge :D

You're right, never been to Dodge, but I was a technical production manager and live sound engineer for more than 20 years. :p

That maybe the case, but telling dodge to have smaller speakers is like telling my 18 month old he can’t watch peppa pig!!

I think I found a picture of his kitchen...

I didn’t know my plans were floating around the interweb

And my Mrs didn’t say she had a photo shoot

Did William Friedkin do it?

I know you say transducers are not for you, but have you ever actually tried any at all, and ideally any that have been set up properly ? If not then don't knock it til you have.

I’m not knocking them, they’re just not the thing for me. I’ve heard subs, including my own, were I can actually feel the air passing me. My own subs do that right now along with the tactile sensation so I don’t feel the need to add any false sensation into the seat itself. A good sub/s is enough for me.

They're for horrible subs or night time mode. There are also chairs that will throw you around to the soundtrack like a mechanical bull, which from what I hear work really well.. but would you want that?

The only thing I've took exception with all this... stuff, is the claim that's it's hard to over treat a room, which is utter balls - clearly demonstrated here.

There nothing wrong with that sized room. You should get fab sound with the right kit and layout.

I have a room exactly that size here you can come and audition if you want some inspiration...

Thanks Rob,

When I’m down your way I’d love to pop in for a few hours :smashin:

Please do. The room I have in mind has no acoustic treatment and I have a new stereo and a surround system in there, both using in wall speakers and both that will knock spots of systems using traditional in room speakers anyway near the price.

I’ll drop you a message when I’m heading down that way. Looking at options etc would be great.

Dodge - have you tried filling in the online form at GIK? Glenn Kuras won't try to suggest stuff just to bump up sales (he really doesn't need to) and they will give you a free analysis and suggestion plan in a few days. Worth a look - it's free, their products are first-class and their product range is wide enough to offer a complete solution. Just an idea.

Good shout, I’ll give that a go.

Who knows, they may even allow me to have a Sub or two.

:D

Haha. Glenn will definitely be expecting you have some serious woofage ;)

You can follow their design to the letter, or mod it to your needs, or ask Glenn to modify it if there's anything you're not happy with and he'll oblige. GIK is a great company to deal with and I have always been 100% satisfied with their products, their advice and their service.

I was a bit sneaky in that I bought one of their panels, took it apart, learned how to make it myself and then did the rest DIY (real easy) but GIK are happy to sell you all the materials anyway if you want to go that way (other than the timber).

Since then, they have expanded their range enormously and now have absorbers, diffusers, combined absorver/diffusors etc. You'll see them all on their website.

If they allow a Sub bigger than 6” that would be a bonus starter.
