Last year I posted about ongoing problems with a Sagem PVR (the most recent thread is here). For a long time we thought the problem was connected with our reception, but eventually it turned out that one of the tuners was faulty, and probably had been since new.

To cut a long story short, in January we got a Humax PVR9300T and right from the start, occasionally a recorded programme showed slight picture or sound break-up. Initially, thinking lightning didn't strike twice etc, we decided it was probably reception problems due to weather conditions.

However, as time has gone on it has become clear that the problem is in the Humax and seems to occur only when it's recording - but can be seen when watching live as well as in playback. In addition to the picture and sound break-up, we've been getting intermittent momentary crackling noises followed by a temporary drop in sound level. I've found recent reports of very similar problems on another forum. Humax seem to think it's probably a faulty tuner, although we haven't monitored it enough to be sure if it is that or something else.

We now have to decide what to do: the retailer would happily replace it, but say they can no longer get the exact same model, so they could either send it away for repair (which takes several weeks) or we could upgrade if we pay the difference. So what we're wondering is: have we just been unlucky in having two different makes of PVR with a tuner problem, both probably from new, or is the technology inherently dodgy? And would a more expensive PVR have better parts? However, part of the reason for choosing Sagem and Humax was not just price, but feature set. Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcome.
