Is there any reason to upgrade my current SB Live Value to an 'audiophile' soundcard (or anything else for that matter) if all I'm using it for is outputting Dolby Digital/DTS to my AV proc on the digital out? I've heard tales about iffy drivers and strange sample rate conversions going on, but nothing concrete.

Surely DD/DTS are packet based, so should perform the same no matter what's outputting them to the proc?

    Cheers,

    Dunc

I went from a SB Live player to a m-audio 2496. Night and day difference for pcm music over s/pdif.

I can't say of such a big difference for dolby digital, probably better though!!!. As you say, packets are good, but also the sending card's s/pdif clock will be used as a reference by the dac's in 99.8% of all av amps, so will affect sound quality.

    regards,
    Rob.

PCM huge difference, DD / DTS less so.
