2.5" notebook hard drives are starting to look more attractive to me these days

    -large capacity (up to 100Gb)
    -high speeds (7200rpm)
    -SATA interfaces
    -low noise
    -low heat
    -falling prices

but has anyone had any experiences of using them in HTPC setups...?
anyone think it would be a feasible prospect...?

It is feasible, and some ITX cases use laptop optical drives and HDD's to save power. I presume most modern drives are quiet by default.

yeah, but there's quiet and then there's quiet...

The toshiba laptop drives got great writeups on www.silentpcreview.com a while ago, I think several people on there use them in desktop PCs/HCPCs, should be fine.

what sort of prices are 100GB ones going for at the moment?

It's good that people think Tosh laptop drives are quiet, as our Tosh laptops certainly aren't at all quiet - esp not the optical drives...

yeah, to be fair its just the HDs I've heard are quiet, there's plenty more in a laptop that can make a racket!

I've just built an HTPC with a WD Scorpio 80GB, 8MB cach 5200rpm notebook drive and I'm very happy with it. My case (Silverstone LC11m) didn't have any 2.5" drive mountings so I suspended it in a 3.5" bay using a "cats cradle" of elastic thread. It's basically inaudible from outside the case, and certainly MUCH quieter than a 3.5" drive would be (even quieter than a Samsung Spinpoint). You pay for the silence though - the cost per GB is quite high, and 80GB isn't that big for a home theatre PC...

    HTH,

    Duggy
