With an upcoming HTPC project approaching i wanted to get peoples opnions on what they find is the best HTPC front end, if any. Ok before we start i find MCE a little too basic/limited and if anything a bit frustrating. TBH i cant decide on a single one for all purpose application and have found from some testing that no single application is perfect.

Im considering the possibility of running my content with the various seperate/favourite PC apps for each idividual purpose (listed below) and if anything rely on a tasty/configurable but simplistic front end in Windows perhaps via Windows Blinds or something like Samuraiz?

Anyone else found themselves thinking the same?

    My uses are quite typical:

Photos (i like the MCE gallery the way it pans)
    Music WMA/MP3/Lossless combinations
Video MPEG 1/2/ other formats like divx and Hi-def ts 720p/1080i

I prefer to use a DVDr machine for recording yet plan to rip certain recordings to PC hard-drive as individual vob files. Ive tested this and its perfect for things like music videos offering the full original quality as the source. Ive no need for PC PVR functions.

Im starting with a 500gb drive but the system will allow for 4 of these drives in time/if required. MCE will be the operating system installed but i wont always use it in MCE form.

One of the resons is that i have many preferences requirements for file/types yet dont want to be constrained to a single applications workings.

    My favourite apps are:

    Audio:
    itunes
    Winamp

    Video:
    Vlc
    Theatre Tek
    Media Player Classic
    Power DVD
    Quicktime Pro 7

Advice please on making a windows desktop with media shortcurts and having a rich/stylish yet workable front end.

    Currently looking into windows blinds.

As this is the Windows Media Center Edition sub forum, it is a pretty fair bet that everyone in this forum uses MCE and therefore are not best placed to advise you.

You might want to repeat the question in the Entertainment Computers & Components forum.
