I understand the HT200 has an international powersupply which means that you can buy one from anywhere, plug it in and go. (Don't know if the warranty is international though?)

In Germany the HT200 sells for £4565.72
    (www.hifi.regler.de or www.vsp.de)

Is this the cheapest? Can you get it cheaper in the USA? Has anyone bought one of these things abroad?

You will have to pay VAT on an imported machine but not duty (inside europe)

au contraire - as the machine is being purchased within the European Union, then VAT will already have been paid, so no worries

No, VAT has nothing to do with European Union, the duty does, if you buy a product inside EU you don't pay duty.

VAT is addedd on everything (luxury good)
that is made or comes into the country.

When you import a car, you lose the tax from the source country but pay the VAT when it enters the UK.

Unless somebody else can explain why you wouldn't pay VAT I would be interested because I have imported lots of large items from withing the EU and have always had to pay VAT at 17.5%

The point surely is that you do not pay VAT in Germany and so the price may be even cheaper than suggested. On importing , you add on the UK VAT of 17.5%

You do pay VAT in Germany, and therefore no need to pay the UK VAT on import. Therefore, importing from within the EU should incur no additional duties/taxes since you have already paid them in the source country.

However, if you import from outside the EU, add on import duty and 17.5% VAT on the cost+duty.

I think the thing here is that you can choose to either pay VAT as it enters the UK at the prevailing rate, OR pay the VAT in the country of purchase. Whichever is the cheaper.

    Sorry guys,
But to put the issue to bed, the fact is you have to pay V.A.T of 16.5% in Germany. On importing the goods to the U.K no duty is payable, but you must still pay 17.5%. Once you have done this, you can then claim back the 16.5% VAT paid in Germany,by filling in the forms obtained from your local Customs & Excise dept.
This will still make the unit considerably cheaper than the U.K.

I think Gordon is correct here.

    I imported a Sony Pre-amp/Processor from Germany.
£1299 UK retail, £1100 best price here, £773 delivered from Germany.

I paid the local German VAT, and was never asked to pay English VAT here, other people I know have done the same.

Spot on Gordon - if VAT is paid in the (EU) country of purchase there is no further VAT or import duty payable.

So there you have it - HT200 £1500 less if bought from a shop 15 miles away across the channel! As far as I can make out the warranty is valid in the whole of Europe.

How much longer must these rip-offs go on? Can't wait until the EU one-market rules start to kick-in, in the meantime two words to remember chaps - ones RIP and the others OFF!

Nice product, shame about the price.

Interesting how different people will tell you different things about duty and VAT etc.

I've got no idea what the official "rules" are, but here are the facts of my experience.

I bought my VPL-VW10HT from hifi-regler in Germany. I paid them an amount which included German VAT (and duty). There was NOTHING extra to pay, on arrival in the UK.

I didn't start this thread for a discussion on VAT? (That bit is easy. Simply fly over to Germany in a business suit and take a laptop. Come back home with your laptop & projector and there will be no questions asked. You will be just another business person travelling abroad to make another business presentation, just like the thousands of business people that fly in and out each day. Simple isn't it.)

What I started this thread for was to find out about dealers, their reliability, their after sales support and also about the HT200. Will it work over here, or do you need a transformer etc? Is the spec the same? etc etc etc

    Ranjan,
I have heard of a few dealers that sell the ht200 for 4.5k-5k-especialy in Germany.
If you buy in Germany the same warranties etc..apply to you being in the european community as anyone else..But you would need to clarify on point of sale.
