Anybody here that can help me with a couple of questions I have about the HT-X30R?

Fist off I need to know if it plays DVD-R with no trouble?
(wouldn't like to think i just went out & wasted my money, when I have an old DVD at home already, that plays them just fine )

And secondly, It looks like I will be having the four speakers positioned together
(no room to put the rear speakers behind me)
Would this in anyway spoil the sound, in a way that I would notice?
Or is there another way of setting the speakers up to work better together?

hope you can help me out!
    cheers

Yes it plays DVD-R just fine.

And lining up all of the speakers would completely defeat the object of surround sound, and frankly, sound terrible. Speaker position is very important to get the most out of your system.
If you really have no space whatsoever, think about investing in a 2.1 system that will create the surround sound experience from just the 2 front speakers. These systems can be very good, but will never stand up against a proper 5.1 surround experience.

Putting all the speakers together is NOT a good idea, it will sound terrible, and I doubt very much that you can not position rear speakers, unless you are setting it up in a broom cupboard. If you do live in a broom cupboard then get a quality stereo system
Think through what you are buying the Samsung only has one optical input.
What will you need to connect?
    SKY+
    SKYHD
    PS3
    PS2
    Xbox
    Media centre
    Virgin
    all need optical.

    Thanks for replying

I should have give a bit more info for you!

I treated oursrlves to a new 42, samsung tv which sits on a black glass stand.
This stand has two shelves underneath, which is where I would like to position the speakers.

I know I'm missing out on real surround sound, but I don't really have the room to have rear speakers.

If I could find a good 2.1 system that would fit inside the shelves I would be very happy, but I can't.

Another limiting factor is the distance between the shelves is only 8ins so I'm probably looking at speakers no more then 7ins high.

If you got anything in mind please share your thoughts.

If you have a 42" screen in a room, it must be larger than a broom cupboard you should beable to place speakers around a room or is it a case of you can not be bothered to run cables which I think is the case. I have never seen a room that a 5.1 system can not be fitted in.
Send some pictures in as this seems unbelieveable.

You are right about the not wanting the wireing across the room, but also the setup of my lounge makes rear speakers a no no.

Any suggesttion on a 2.1 that will fit?
