Assuming HDMI is out of the question (cost too much, £750  ).

What the best way to connect to the HS20 from a prog.scan Pioneer 868, vanilla component or go for a scaler and component?

The scaler in the HS10/HS20 is pretty good. Just get a good PS player and you will notice the difference, especially on NTSC DVDs but not so much on PAL when comparing interlaced vs progressive.

    I am looking at either:

Pioneer 868 or Arcam 79 if I go down the HDMI route or the Denon 2900 if I just stick to component.

All are Prog. Scan machines so are you saying dont bother with an iscan?
