    Couple of questions

    Downloads
Is anyone aware of any sites where it's possible to download high-quality files? Everywhere seems to offer nothing more than 128khz files (in whatever format), which I find really lacking. Ideally (and I'm probably dreaming), I'd like to find someplace that offers downloads in full uncompressed AIFF or WAV formats. If there are any, I've not come across them yet (at least not legal ones). Allofmp3.com seem to offer "CD Quality" downloads, but (a) "CD Quality" is pretty generic as a term (WMP seems to think it's "anything over 192khz"), and (b) I'm pretty sure they're not legal (isn't it a Russian site with a few rumours about connections to the Russian Mafia or something?)

    File Conversion
I have all my CDs ripped into Apple Lossless format on an 80Gb iPod, but I'd like to load a few tracks onto my GF's player for her. It's a "non-Pod", and doesn't handle Apple Lossless or AAC. Therefore I would like to transcode the files into MP3 for her. However, I've heard iTunes's MP3 encoder isn't that great (more rumors that Apple intentionally made it that way so the AAC vs MP3 difference would be more pronounced), so am looking for a suggestion as to what to use as a converter. I don't want to have to dig out all the discs again, so would ideally like to go from A/Lossless directly to MP3, although I could downsize them to compressed AAC first if necessary. Also, would like the converter to be able to produce VBR MP3s of at least 192khz, higher if better.

    TIA

You could try http://www.musicgiants.com/ for downloads...I've not used them, so don't know what they're like.

TBH, for albums at least, CD's are still much better value than downloads.

All of MP3 is a grey area, and I believe they will now only allow you to download if you have a Diners Club card. Also their top encoding rate was 320 kbps.

As for converting from ALAC - I tunes doesn't do a bad job, but it's not great. Try a couple of tracks and see how you get on. If it's for a portable, your g/f probably won't know any difference anyway.

Otherwise a quick Google has revealed:
