Anyone know where I can get this filter from, no shops like Jacobs/Jessops/small stores etc sell this filter!.

I would rather purchase it from a UK place rather than from the USA if possible...

Hi Jim

In what way doe's the Hoya HMC FL-D filter differ from the Hoya FL-D one

tahustvedt

Thanks for that :)

Just to clarify things a bit more.

Most filters let more than 80% of light through. The real issue is reflectance. This is where the filter surface reflects light back in the direction it originated from.

The "standard" Hoya FL-Day reflects approx 4% of light from either side, so it's overall throughput is just under 92%.

The Hoya HMC FL-Day reflects far less light, having a throughput of over 97%.

Reflected light obviously reduces lumen output, but also reduces contrast, affects colour balance & reduces detail.

HOYA Multicoated HMC
& Super HMC Filters

[[[[[[[[ HMC Multicoated Filters
These popular filters are renowned for their ability to mimise reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting. The result is an average light transmission of over 97% giving sharp contrast and well balanced colour. Hoya HMC filters are recommended for enhancing the performance of today's multicoated lenses. ]]]]]]]]]

Li On isn't an expert on filters as he is using the "standard" FL-Day filter, and asked a very similar question on AVS Forums.

Obviously preferable to get the HMC version, as the cost difference is negligable.

Hope this helps.

p.s any decent camera shop should be able to order this filter, as Hoya are a very common filter in the photography trade.

Well Jessops/Jacobs cannot order the filters, its simply not listed on their computers or their suppliers database. They only sell the non HMC type. I think Ive looked everywhere to no avail, looks like I will have to do without.

This listing of HMC filters from HOYA is basically what ALL camera shops have/can get http://www.introphoto.co.uk/hoya3.htm

except for the HMC FL-D one

James,

While I was in the Midlands this weekend, I popped into Jessops in Walsall, and asked the chap behind the counter if they sell the Hoya HMC FL-D. After a few keystrokes on his computer, he said "Yeah we can get them in next day for you if you want, they start from £17 to about £20 depending on which size you want".

So if you're still trying to find one, it might be worth giving them a call, speak to Garry on 01922 627673 (Walsall branch)

Hope this helps.

Punce I will give it a try, but I had the same reply in Jessops. When I pressed them further to make sure it was the HMC model they said it was the same, so I said HMC meant it was multi-coated. Then the guy from Jessops said there was'nt any difference  between the filters anyway, so I continued to explain about the light dropoff with the non-HMC version.

Ive been to both of the Jessop stores in Birmingham and the one near Rackhams is a huge store with about 1000 filters on display...but no HMC FL-D on their computers/stock list. I also emailed some of the HOYA distributers in the UK which said on their webpage they stock ALL HOYA filters, they replied saying the HMC FL-D filter is for the USA market only

I think it must be a new product, and the USA market gets everything first right, we should get it in about 12 months at twice the price

jrwood,
It doesn't appear to be a NEW item - as I just found this filter at my local camera specialist (Sussex Camera's in HORSHAM) - as part of old stock that they were clearing out. £14-99. ITs definitely the right one (HMC clearly marked on the rim).

As someone else in this thread said, I think your best bet is to go to a independant (i.e. non-chain) camera shop - where their staff are more likely to be enthusiats .. and at least know what you are trying to buy.

(not sure of the above mentioned shop's phone number - but their address is probably 'No.?? Carfax, HORSHAM, West Sussex).
