Hi Guys,
I am all new to understanding video copying and everything that surrounds it.
I know what I want to do.
But don’t know how to go about it.
First of all I live in the UK.
I have a satellite dish.
I watch freesat on my TV.
I have some spare cable coax connections coming off the LMB on the satellite dish.
I would like to connect these connections to some type of media reception box that did NOT encrypt the incoming video .
Then I would like to send that video signal to my PC.
And be able to record it ,obviously without encryption been on.
I would like to send it by way of ethernet connection as I already have my house set up with router switches and so on for my network.
A few years back I read about a device that could do something like this!
It was called a VBOX TV set top box and media player combined.
I lost interest in it after reading a lot of bad reviews on it!
Could someone please suggest some hardware that could do such a job ?
I like reading so feel free to give me a list of different devices / makes?
Thank You.

You could buy an Enigma 2 STB and then access the recorded videos on it's hard drive via WiFi on your PC like I do below.

Thank you, dmpoole, for the info.
I will need to read up on your suggestion as I know nothing about
the Enigma 2 STB.
Does it NOT encrypt the video?
I tried using the hard drive out of a Humax recorder but the video was useless
as it had been encrypted.

Enigma 2 STB's - Search - enigma 2

Personally I'd go for the VU+ or Gigablue, I have recently bought a VU+ Uno4K to replace an old VU+ Solo2 which can also transfer video to PC. thinking about it I have a network cable attached to my STB.
I can record at least 8 channels at one time and access the STB from any room in the house with a Firestick or similar.

dmpoole,
Could you post/recommend some links to where
I can read up on this and buy from.
Much appreciated..

is this the type of recorder you are referring ?
Amazon product ASIN B00KFPY54W

Yes but a bit overkill, something like this - Gigablue UHD UE 4K 2xDVB-S2X FBC (8 demodulators) ULTRA HD Linux Enigma 2 PVR Receiver

or the one I have - VU+ Uno 4K SE 1x DVB-S2X FBC (8 demodulators) Twin Tuner Linux Enigma 2 PVR Receiver UHD 2160p

However if all you want to do is record one channel at a time and transfer to your PC then something like this - VU+ Zero 4K 1x DVB-S2X Multistream Tuner Linux Enigma 2 Receiver UHD 2160p

If you're not bothered about 4K - VU+ Zero HD 1x DVB-S2

and don't forget to add Firmware (OpenVIX) and a HDD.

Thank you dmpoole for all the info.
it has been most helpful.
I only wish to record one channel at a time & send it to my pc.
I think I will take a look at the link

Can you confirm that these boxes do NOT encrypt the video they receive ?

I can 100% guarantee that my VU+ STB doesn't and my old one didn't because I regularly copy the videos to my phone to watch at other places.
I have also just edited out all the adverts on a music documentary.

There is somebody on here selling the none 4K version - For Sale - VU+ Zero DVB-S2 Satellite Receiver
If you're interested make sure it has an HDD

I would like the 4K version as I already have a 4K tv set.

is the option Firmware (OpenVIX) an option on the setup menu of the box
or do I need to Google for it and download it as a file ?
cheers

There is no 4K Freesat content however the picture on my new 4K box looks excellent on my 4K TV compared to my older STB.

If you go to the page I linked there are options for Firmware (£1) and to add an HDD.
You can download your own firmware or even other peoples but it's easier to start off with it added.
I recommend Open VIX and that's not because it's any better than other alternatives but because World Of Satellite are behind it with good support.
If they put OpenVix on then you have a starting pad where you can then setup your LNB and scan for channels.

Be warned - E2 boxes can take a while to setup so you have them working to your requirements.
It can be a steep learning curve.

I've now got mine setup to stream from my server, to save to my server, to stream IPTV and so on.
I can access it from 5 rooms in my house with Fire devices.
You can even put KODI on it and all sorts of different plugins.
You can even install different skins so it looks exactly like a Sky or Virgin box.

Sorry I asked the question before fully reading your link ... I have all the answers.
cheers

TY dmpoole.
I have a 1 Gigabit network here.
The specs for the
uno 4k se say it has a
Gigabit LAN connection.
So would use that
I am assuming here I will be able to copy recorded files off the uno 4k se .
That is where I will need to do some more reading.
I have been on youtube for more info, unfortunately
most of the videos are none English.:(

I've got the VU setup in my File Manager.
I've just copied from the VU HDD to my PC and opened up the file in VLC.

Also with OpenVIX a plugin called OpenWEBIF will be installed, this means you can see all your STB in a web browser and program it from there.

I have a very simple EPG setup so my wife can see it properly, you can make it as complicated as you want.

Thats looking really good.
It's how I would like mine set up.
I like to keep things simple.
Does the EPG set up on it's own when powered up and connected to sat Dish ?

No but in the Settings you will see EPG importer.
You choose your sources, only last night after a couple of problems I now only have one source of Freesat.
You can then do a Manual download or set it up to download every day at a certain time.

Where are the sources ?
Do you mean download from a location?
for the EPG guide?
I have never set anything up like this B4.
So please excuse me on asking the simple stuff...😂
