Dont pay the money as they will just take your bank details and rob you blind. It is known as a 'Fake Alert' it convinces you that your computer is broken one way or other and offers to fix for money, problem being the alert is the virus itself.

I have not heard of the AV you mention so am guessing it is no good, sorry to say.

For something like you are after use Malwarebytes (they have a free version that will do fine) Spybot search and Destroy (again free)

One of these two should remove the virus in question. Install them and update them then run safe mode and run them there.

Problem solved.

That may be, so is Norton (symantec) apparently. But no one who works in or around IT would recomend it to be used ;)

Just because the company is good at PR doesnt make the product good.

I sorted this one for my daughter recently .easiest way was to put computer in safe mode with networking support. download malwarebytes it found the problem cleared it asked for a reboot and all was good again.
The virus wouldn't let me start Mcfee Internet security that's why I had to restart win 7 in safe mode hope it helps .

Not strictly true.

Most of these places have very similar virus definitions databases and the only differences come down to personal preference and the software resource usage. Norton has come a long way over the last couple of years and is now starting to get some respect back, even with those in the industry.

Okay, I personally would not recommend it, but I would certainly say it's better than it used to be and the former bad rep it has gained is no longer as justified.
I would certainly not advise paying for Norton though.

For me the average home user can be safe enough with free software.

Similar databases yes but not the same. Companys who care about the end user make a application with a smaller footprint on the system and more up to date definition databases more regular (among other differences). Norton may make headway same as other larger companies do but they are no longer interested in what experience the end user is getting. And for the company that makes the most this is a sad thing. Back in the hay day they were one of the best out there.

But as you say you wouldnt recomend it to anyone. I also wouldnt try clean a machine with thier product as it wouldnt find what it needs to.

But anyhow this is not a bashing of companys just giving informative views and my own opinion and work colleges from analysis and usage.

Everything that the softwares out there do can be done manually same as the removal of this virus mentioned. But software just makes life easier, and no mistakes made.

I just feel strongly about those companys out there who are happy to take peoples money but not spend it on improving the product to what is wanted.

lol, I was not talking about how a company is 'good at PR' means it's a good product

they are quite huge in the enterprise market and my experience with them have been pretty good (currently running their mac version). While since Norton '09 (especially in IMO since version '10), Norton have picked up the ball

anyway back on topic, OP, here are some threads where similar type programs have emerged:
