    Hi please help me
    I have the following
    ..Optoma gt750 projector
..Panasonic sa-btt400 blue ray surroumd sound player
I have just been given the following
..Sony str-k780 av unit with 5.1 surround sound and an active subwoofer.

I wanted to add just the subwoofer to my Blu-ray player but have not got a sub out.
I only have aux L R on the back.

So I thought I'd try and run the Blu-ray player through the Sony system and use the surround speakers on that rather than the bluray. But I can't seem to get the Blu-ray to output sound the the AV receiver.

How do I connect up and adjust setting toake it work? Or how can I get the sub to work on its own with Blu-ray player.
The sub only has 1 input
    Thanks

Unfortunately those "aux" connectors on the player are inputs, like the optical connector next to them.

You could theoretically use a HDMI audio extractor (search on eBay) connected to the player to get an optical/coaxial output to feed into the Sony, but according to the manual the Sony only appears to decode Dolby Digital and DTS so it might be of limited use (unless it supports multi-channel PCM too).

It looks like you have speaker outputs on the back of the BD deck?! If that is the case, you could try a high level to line (low) level convertor. Should be cheaper than a HDMI to analogue audio convertor.

You need HDMI to transmit multi-channel PCM. S/pdif only supports multichannel compressed digital audio up to DTS.

    S/PDIF - Wikipedia

Blu-ray best audio is lossless DTS Master HD or similar. Only a proper AV receiver will decode the lossless high quality audio and also provide a cross over to extract the low frequency audio from a stereo source to send to the subwoofer.

You're right of course, I'd forgotten that S/PDIF can't handle uncompressed multichannel audio.

Which is why I suggested that his Sony receiver might be of limited use, even if fed via a HDMI audio extractor. That said, they're only around £10-£15 so it might be worth a punt?

If I was in his position I'd connect the 5 normal speakers which came with his Sony to the speaker outputs on the player and find a compatible subwoofer - though that's not exactly what he wants to do.

I think if the op has any real ambition for decent av, then they should get a newer Av reciever.
