Question How to prep artex ceiling for upward firing atmos solution?

Apologies for the newbie question but I have an old lounge with a flat artex ceiling (ref attached photo). I keep hearing that upward firing solutions are a cheaper / simpler entry into the world of atmos / dts:x. However, for that to work, the ceiling needs to be as "reflective as possible."

Looking at the current artex profile, straight away I'm guessing that I'd need to plaster this, skim and get it flat.

My question is, do I need to apply any special paint or coating to assist with making the ceiling reflective or is normal emulsion paint OK?

Again, sorry if I'm asking an obvious question but I'm curious to know what improvements I can make to the ceiling to help with upward firing speakers (the recently reviewed focal sib evos caught my attention).

Thanks.
