How to Mod a DVD Player?

I have an old Pioneer 535 dvd player, which now has a dodgy laser. I was wondering is there anyway to diy customise/ modify this player - e.g. change the dvd rom, alter the chipset or firmware or mobos etc. Anyone had success at doing such or read articles on such.
