Having done some spring cleaning I came across an old Technics turntable I haven't used since the late 1980's. I've got a Pioneer VSx-LX53 receiver. I know I can't plug my turntable directly into my digital amp. What do I need between the Turntable and amp?

You need a phono preamp between the turntable and receiver. Plug the outputs of the phono preamp into any pair of free RCA audio inputs on the receiver (CD, TV/satellite, etc.). The inputs are all the same, so name in unimportant. See the following link for examples of the choices available. The Cambridge and Pro-Ject units are good, popular choices in budget phono preamps.
