How to format hard drive for UE55D8000 recording?

Does anyone know how to format a USB connected hard drive to record from the UE55D8000? I originally had it formated NTFS and it saw the drive but didn't offer to format it. Samsung said to format it FAT32 and then it didn't even see it at all. Drive is a 500Gb Samsung Spinpoint HD501LJ.

Trying to record from Freeview and the samsung says the currently connected device does not support recording.

I've also tried a Samsung USB powered drive and that behaves the same so I think it must be a format problem. Just can't find any information.

If you press the record button while watching Freeview, doesn't the D8000 offer to format and then test the stick for you?

I switched off the TV and tried again when I had a similar problem and that's what happened.

I think I may have found the problem. I'm using the Rovi guide and it doesn't seem to offer the format option. I've switched back to Samsung's guide and it offers to format the drive when I switch on. Just formated it and redownloaded the Rovi listings and now it records.

Pity they don't put this in the manual somewhere. Support at Samsung don't have a clue either.
