    Hi,

Is there a 'rule of thumb' to estimate amp power based on room size. Ideally, also based on types of listening, e.g. background, general listening, kids disco etc.

No. Too many variables; efficiency of speakers, amount of reflective / absorbant surfaces in room, sound level you like to listen at, amount of compression of source material, how much distortion you'll tolerate etc. etc.
