How much to spend on A/V Amp & Speakers

I know that there is a general 'unwritten' rule that you should spend circa 10% of the price of your home cinema equipment on cables.

Is there any simiar rule that dictates how much you should spend on speakers compared with an amp/reciever ?

On the one hand there's no point having great speakers if the quality of the signal they receive from the amp isn't that good.

But similarly, there's no point having a great amp only to send a great quality signal to speakers that aren't good enough to make the most of it.

Cheers for your help,

On that basis, the Pioneer AX5i Amp/receiver (Circa £1200) would be a better match for the KEF Q7 speaker package (Circa £2000) than the AX-10i @ £2,200.

Thanks

This is something I have been wondering about, also are you talking about 5.1 or 7.1 speakers? Obviously the more speakers the higher % that they would take up of the overal cost.

What %ages would you recommend for a 7.1 system?

Thanks.

you would normally spend twice the value of the amp on speakers....so they (whoever they are) say!!
