Setting the contrast and brightness using a test disk or the THX Optimiser is pretty important and can make a big difference to the image you see, and then if you get the image brightness closer to the standards you should have an image that should be visually artifact free (assuming good source material) and a more cinematic image.
So, sounds like you've covered the basics and are quite happy
If you're prone to tweaking, don't look into greyscale and calibration to D65 or you'll be spending a lot of your time getting the image perfect to the nth degree.
