im thinking of building a ported mini Marty, trying to work out sizes etc.

    I'll be using a Dayton a Ultimax 18

It will be in a false wall with acoustic transparent material in front of it.

How much do I need to leave in front of the baffle for the actual driver and driver movement? Thanks

You need about 30mm for the driver surround itself, depending on if you are going to flush mount it in the baffle or not and you’d want to leave the same again for outward excursion.

Thanks, I would router the front baffle so the metal surround is flush, so it would just be the rubber and max excursion. So if I leave 6mm would that be ample? How would it be if it was behind a diy lycra screen? Would it shake the screen?

I will try and measure properly this evening when I get home.
It would shake the screen but probably only when turned up, although a port would cause more screen movement

I was thinking of having the port below the screen and 2/3 of the driver too. I would not fit the driver centrally in the box but have it as low as possible on the baffle. Thanks

Sorry for the late reply. Just measured the Ultimax. It needs 20mm clearance when flush mounted in the baffle and another 20mm should be plenty for excursion, but it’s a bit tricky to measure for sure.

    From UM18-22 18

"Over 2" of total cone travel", I'm guessing thats 1 inch in and 1 in out.

Yes, the specification says 22mm xmax, but they were tested to about 35mm xmech.
