This is prompted by the money left after bills question. A personal question I know so I don't expect people to go into further details unless you want to. A poll is about as private as it can get. Your own salary (not joint take home pay), after tax, from your main job.

Thought it would be kinda interesting to see how many people fall in the average UK salary of around £1750 per month.

Take home has too much scope to it. Are we talking basic without overtime, bonus, expenses?

My overtime can be more then my basic over a month due to me working long hours in the oil&gas. Bonus varies. Expenses aren't really a gain although its a saving as my day to day meals don't come out of my pocket.

I'll vote with what I get this month but that's not always a true figure for me.

I get paid every 4 weeks not monthly so I can't really fit in with the vote, same as those paid weekly

Every 4 weeks: multiply by 13 and divide by 12

Every week: multiply by 52 and divide by 12

    :)

Is the vote private? Just asking. For this year or last, bonus and all that.

    MOD hat off:

What is the benefit of this poll? Sure we will get a spread of data including some anomalies to skew the results.

If Stuart needed to understand the demographic range or his membership then there are more accurate and scientific methods I'd assume.Personally I find this subject and the 'spending money left each month' thread a little futile not to mention personal and a little uncool.

Perhaps it was due to being told as a kid never to ask how much someone earned....?

At a guess I would imagine the 'typical' member of AVForums to be male, 25-55, married, single or divorced and wished they knew how to change their avatars from 2006 and earn more the UK average of £27k/annum gross

Is the £1750/month you quote above after tax and NI deductions so roughly £27k/annum net?

That seems to be the go to British answer... I've got friends from America and other countries and they can't believe how secretive us Brits are about money.

To be fair, I wouldn't ask what someone earns either. Firstly, what someone else earns makes no difference to my life and secondly, I couldn't give a toss. I created the money left over thread to settle an argument. 100+ people voted so it was fairly interesting in my opinion.

I've voted on this thread, mainly because I'm happy to. The gf and I both have pretty average jobs but then again, working in education and policing will never mean mega bucks. Luckily apart from a mortgage and car we have no debts. I know people who earn 4 times my salary and after their overly stupid expenditure, debts and "showing off money" they have the square root of bugger all left over. :)

Yes that's apparently the national average after deductions.

If the hottest girl in the bar asked me how much I earned in the first 5 minutes of talking with her she'd be quickly turfed.

    I've answered.

Two of my least favourite questions if asked by someone I don't know (or sometimes by people I do): 1) What do you "do", and 2) What do you make.

I think it is pretty rude to ask someone what they earn, but a poll is anonymous. You cast your vote or you don't. I voted, but I won't be adding the amount on the thread. I think it is all just a bit of harmless fun. I personally like to see what I earn compared to others even though it makes no difference to anything. I am where I am based on the amount of work I am willing to do. I could earn a lot more or a lot less.

I think it's funny how some people get so worked up about money and see bigger salaries as the most important thing in the world.

I spoke to some obnoxious sod on holiday who despite speaking to me for all of 5 minutes couldn't wait to tell me about his bonus and how much he made. His pay was £15K more then I got... He lived in London though, I live in Yorkshire. Turns out his rent for his little flat was £240 more per month then my mortgage.

Personally, I'd rather have my house and the lower salary then the higher salary bragging rights and a flat surrounded my noisey neighbours!

Lower end of the scale for me. Could be more but I'm not bothering with over time at the moment.

Not only anonymous but the vast majority of us don't know each other either. No one needs to vote if they don't want too and it will be one of many other pointless polls on this forum after a couple of days :)

Its all about disposable income in my opinion. I earn a bit more than the average but have very little left after the bills, mortgage, kids etc have been paid. Someone earning a lot less than me in another part of the country could easily have a better standard of living.

So can we conclude a 'London' salary and living in the North is the best case scenario?

We go to London a fair bit and I do like it but I like knowing that it's only temporary... I had an interview in London and just getting or the place drove me mad. I don't like the tube at the best of times but the number of people was unbelievable! I completely understand most move there for jobs etc, I can do mine anywhere though so I'm happy in the rainy North!

You may have your dry, sunny days but we've got Rugby League up here... ;)

    What job do you do @a l e x ?
My job borders on being able to work from home, but not many companies offer the option.
