I've found the D2011 for £599, new. And the AX5i for £849, new.

    Is the AX5i worth the extra? I haven't done a side-by-side comparison.

Bear in mind I won't be using iLink, and will be biamping my front channels (i.e. not using any centre-rears).

    All opinions welcome

    TIA

    Dimmy :)

Sound quality wise it isn't any better. Or rather is isn't any better that I could hear. A good freind of mine has said that the new Yamaha 2400 is a better amp than the AX5i, so maybe this is another option? I haven't heard the Yamaha myself, but the "word on the street" is that Yamaha are back on the ball AV wise with their new THX range (not because of THX, mind). I have always liked Yamaha's processing - they sound very cinematic.

For people not already in the know, I hate Yamaha kit (with a giant, servo-sized H people).

Thanks for the opinions anyway, I'll pick up that 2011.

AX5i also has USB and Firewire - not sure if you require these inputs.
Also, the AX5i is widely acknowledged as being very good in stereo mode.

The Pioneer is good compared to other Pioneer or Denon amps. Compared to Harman/Kardon, or NAD, Pioneer still lag behind by some margin.

Dislike the aesthetics, dislike the sound, dislike the build quality, dislike everything about yamaha kit. Which amounts to Hate .

I won't have a use for Firewire, but I may very well have a use for USB, which the 2011 has too.

    Kill Bill :D.

In poweramp quality, perhaps. The Pioneer receivers have got unusually strong poweramp performance, and have made some headway from past receivers. NAD/HK are lagging behind significantly in processing terms.
