We're looking for rough numbers for the number of DVDs, Blu-rays and HD Blu-rays you buy on average each year.
    Thanks for voting.

Yep the easy answer is too many. Some members here regard multi disc box sets as one DVD or Blu. Hence the Star Trek The Next Generation is only one even though it has something like 36 discs in it.

I can see being a bumper year for purchases, have bought quite a few this month and have about 9 om pre-order already.

Yeah, I count a boxset as one unit as well.

In around the last 6 months I've bought both of the Emma Peel Avengers sets, Star Trek TOS and Star Trek TNG the entire series boxsets. So that's maybe 60 to 70 discs that count as 4.

    It's a crazy old world.

This year I've bought about 40 Blu-rays and 60 DVDs.

EDIT: as discussed already, these are units so some might have more than 1 movie/TV show.

As many as I can without the boss knowing, and then the Hollywood blockbuster movies that I tell her about.

Sometimes I get the discs home and take the cellophane off and hide them amongst the others lol. Then say do you fancy watching this? And she replies " eee I forgot we had that" rotfl

I'm not really sure (I don't bother to keep count anymore) so I've gone for 20-24 per year, but it might be less than that. My disc buying days are on a much more conservative level these days. I used to buy DVDs like there was no end, but have tried to be more economical with blu rays. I now mainly buy the odd blockbuster on day one release, the odd kids/animated film on release, and the rest consist of cheap bargains, multi buy offers, and blus from the classifieds. Having said that, I went a bit crazy last year and bought around 20 back catalogue titles from Amazon in the space of a couple of weeks, as they were films from my childhood that I wanted to see again (e.g. Crocodile Dundee, Howard the duck). Aside from that, I feel I have reigned in my buying compared to years gone by.

Other reasons for this, apart from not having enough time to watch films, is that I subscribed to Amazon Prime last year so I've found myself just watching stuff using that service instead. I've also recently acquired Netflix, so I'll probably be buying even less this year as there are loads of films/tv I want to watch on the latter.

    Haven't bought a DVD for about 5 years now. Blu-rays I would guess about 10-20 a year.

The bands are awfully narrow, my purchasing varies from year to year.

I tend to buy limited editions (Steelbook or Box Sets) of films / TV series that I like or wish to catch up on, so the exact number of discs that I buy depends on how many of those are released each year and how good those editions are.

I am choosy and won't buy a Blu Ray just because it comes in a limited edition package.

If the quality of the Blu Ray transfer and/or extras and/or packaging are poor or the price is disproportionate (I won't pay a "premium" for a single disc, cheap design with no extras) then I won't bother.

However, I will pickup an old favourite if the price drops down to "pocket money" levels.

    Otherwise it'll be a rental.

You can either do last year or an average. Rough numbers are good enough.

I buy a movie to watch every week, but 90% will be second hand from our Classifieds. Once watched that movie is sold on again as i no longer wish to collect Blu Rays or else i'll end up with what's up my loft; 3 huge boxes full of worthless DVD's!

    It depends.

I count TV series i.e. The Prisoner, The Wire, Breaking Bad etc as one; as I regard that as one complete piece of work.

Box sets of films i.e. The Stanley Kubrick boxset, Clint Eastwood collection etc, I count as the number of films each set includes, as each film is an individual piece of work.

What about Star Trek TNG the complete series. One box set but seven seasons. So is that one or seven? That almost sounds like it could be a Trek character name.

That could really be either, but for the sake of simplicity and consistency, I would still regard it as one.

It would be too confusing that a box set of seven season was one piece of work and another box set of seven seasons; was seven pieces of work....

    TV series = one.

Films = number of films in the box set.

The review section, particularly Cas Harlow's, is very useful imo.
So I buy reference and Recommended along with keenly awaited titles.
