How many DVD players have you had

Early Pioneer DVD back in 98 - can't remember model.
replaced that with a Tosh SD-900e for component output into my then new plasma
replaced that with an Arcam DV27 to get progressive PAL
replaced that with a DV29 as the DV27 wouldn't give a stable picture via the Lumagen.
Added the Pioneer 656 for SACD playback

Had an LG DVD in the bedroom a couple of years back and replaced that with a Samsung HD-745 when upgraded to an LCD TV with DVI input as the LG only had RGB output.

Other than DVD drives on my PC I think that is about it!

Mark.

My first DVD "player" was the Sony PlayStation 2 back in November 2000. Shortly after I bought a proper Toshiba SD-100E player since the PS2 didn't out RGB SCART, the picture was green!!!

When the Xbox came along in March 2002, I bought the DVD remote (and dongle) and used that as my primary player since the layer change was completely transparent compared with the Toshiba one. I used that until I bought my Samsung DVD-HD850 player a couple of weeks ago, simply so I could play "upscaled" DVDs on my new Samsung LE-26R41BD LCD TV.

So officially I've only bought two DVD players. The others were games consoles.

I've had the following:

Pioneer DV-626D
Some cheap Thomson player
a Pioneer DV-360S
a Pioneer DV-668AVi
a Panasonic DVD-S97

I also have an Xbox, but the playback is pretty shocking. The black level isn't even set correctly.

My players were/are

Panasonic A310 R1 which I paid around £500 for in the summer of 98
Pioneer 626
JVC R1 player (still got)
Nintaus player with VGA output (still got)
Eltax player with divx
Cutebox mini player (still got brought back from Hong Kong)
Pioneer 575 (still got)
Philips 963sa (still got)

I also had a samsung 950 on order but cancelled it at the last minute, don't think I will buy another before HD but you never know as its hard to resist a bargain.

On my second (not counting the PS2).

Wharfedale 750 (yup the one they sold in Tesco for £199.99)!
Pioneer 868

Indiana Jones, I ditched the DV470 because it skipped on many Warner DVDs, locked up frequently and the sound regularly became grossly distorted. 'twas a ****-poor machine. Maybe it was faulty, I don't know, but I got rid of it after only a couple of months.

I'm very happy with the Panny S97 I have at the mo', although the heightened amount of ringing around edges when viewed via progressive is a bit annoying. The Pioneer did beat it in that respect. :D I don't think I'll be getting rid of the Panny just yet though...

Whaow!!

Some people can really go through them.

I've only just replaced my 1999 Panasonic A160 with a Philips 729 (Black version of the 728).

My Panasonic was a great machine and m/regional but wouldn't play DVD+-R.

Anyhow the picture on the Philips is noticeably sharper as is the sound and doesn't seem obvious with layer changes. It plays everything I throw at it and therefore isn't sensitive to finger prints/dirt on rentals. I suppose as long as it doesn't have a blob of mustard or jam stuck to it then it'll be a good little servant.

I also have an Xbox, but the playback is pretty shocking. The black level isn't even set correctly.

Glad somebody else thinks its poor, i thought that i was in the minority, well we still might be :)

Wow Duncan what do you do with all those players you still have?

Reading through this thread has amazed me, mainly because I have gone through...

Toshiba SD2109

Sony NSP930 (still have, possibly)
Giec (still have)

Ooh - just remembered a Pioneer 575 :D

Toshiba SD120
Toshiba SD220
Toshiba SD520
Panasonic DMR E85
Limit DVDA900SE

Pioneer 717
Pioneer 757
Pioneer 470
Arcam FMJ27A

Love 'em ALL! Great Players!

1 (one)!

Sony DVP-F11

Apart from the Playsation 2 Slim I Bought this year...

Ive had 5 (still got 3) excluding xbox, ps2, htpc and other pc's.

Started with a Pioneer 737
replaced with a Tag Mclaren DVD32R
replaced that with a Linn Unidisc 1.1

In the other room I have a Sony something (little one that stands on its side)
and a Linn Unidisc SC

I like my Unidiscs

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned the Panasonic A350 - my first player, hand chipped and still working at my parents' place! (ok, someone had a A310 so I guess it has been mentioned, basically the same machine just different region)

I started with that, eventually upgraded to a Pioneer 646A.

Actually, I no longer rate that player. It was a good upgrade as I wanted DTS and fancied experimenting with DVD-Audio, but really I thought the Panny was the better player.

Now I've got a Pioneer 868 and its superb. Can't see me upgrading for quite a while (even for HD).

Wharfedale 750
Minato GR-1
Tosh 220e
Tosh 340e
Limit 900se
4 pc DVD burners (2 NEC, LG, Optorite)
Shinco 1731a portable

First two gave to parents, 750 too noisy, Minato bought after What HI-FI review and it was junk.

340 returned as didn't like DVD-R

LG now on it's way out but still have the rest.

Interesting thread!

If memory serves me correctly I have owned:

1. 1997 - Panasonic A305
2. 1998 - Sony DV7700
3. 2000 - Sony DVN900S
4. 2001 - Denon 3800
5. 2002 - Arcam FMJ 27+
6. 2003 - Pioneer 757
7. 2004 - Denon A11
8. 2005 - Marantz DV9500

That's it for this hobby for a while - too expensive for ever diminishing returns!

Only 3 for me :) The one I've got will be my last non Hi Def format machine

1.) Panasonic A350 1998
2.) Pioneer DV737 2000
3.) Tag Mclaren DVD32R 2004

Ye it was a good machine at the time and I used the onboard DD decoder into the six channel input on my Yammy processor :) It was the first time I'd had DD in the home. When I got my first PJ in 2000 it showed up the Pannys picture shortcomings badly so I got the Pioneer, which was the first prog-scan capable machine over here :smashin:
