about 5 years ago or whenever blu ray and HD-DVD came out i remember hearning about all the pros and cons of both, and then i remember hearing this report from somewhere that said it won't matter which one you choose, both will be obselete in 5 years as there was something new in the pipeline.

now i have a new HD telly i was thinking about getting a 5.1 blu ray surround sound system but if it's going to be replace by some new format then i'll wait for that.

There will always be some new technology being developed to better other generations, it's the way of the world. If you always waited for 'the next big thing', you would end up buying nothing!

Enjoy what we have now!

There is nothing in the pipeline discwise, the only thing happening is movies on demand but they are the same quality as HD broadcasts which isn't as good as Blu-ray, e.g. colour banding is pretty obvious in places.

Get a player and some blu's and LOVE IT!!

Seriously, I have never bought so many films, EVER !!!

thanks for the replies.
i'm pretty skint so not in a great hurry to buy one, but will keep my eyes open for a good second hand one or a good deal on a new one.
seeing as i have just got a HD telly, and i have a lovefilm subscription i might aswell put them to use!

In my opinion Bluray will be the last disc based format.
The sound and pictures available are outstanding and well worth you dipping your toes in.

The only real alternative is a streamer like a Popcorn hour etc as that is the natural succesor but that is still a way off because Bluray is really that good.

Streamers are still not really designed for the average user they still take time to configure so are still seen as specialist/enthusiast.

As the above guys have said, Bluray is fantastic so you might aswell jump on the bandwagon as soon as you can. Although the majority of publicity goes towards the massive step up in PQ for general consumers, for the likes of us AV-Holics, the audio side of things is even more rewarding, offering lossles soundtracks.

A few weeks back i had a couple of hundred quid to spend on a new player and i had a good old conversation withmyself in regarsd to going basic Bluray or 3D/3D compatible machine. I decided to go with a standard bluray player thats not 3d ready or cannot be upgraded via firmware as i really have no plans or interest in it. My main goal is tip top Video and tip top Audio quality. Although i could of brought a semi decent 3D ready machine for future proof sakes, i brought a more midrange bluray player that would offer me better Standard bluray playback than the latter.

Your only benefit fully however if you display accepts Full HD resolution (1920X1080)

How much cheaper do you want them to get tesco have been selling one for £50 and I have been buying discs for £3 or £4.

I beg to differ!

I've (only) got a 32" 768 display LCD, and outputtin 1080p to it from the Bluray player gives a superb picture, noticeably better than DVD.

Thats why i said your not benefit fully.

Even your not getting the maximum out of bluray and whilst you may notice a considerble difference over SD DVD at 768, your not acheiving the maximum are you.

However, he hasnt given the spec of of HD ready display so im just letting him know.

I'm currently in the same position as you...what did you go for in the end?

For most of us with large projector screens, even those who sit very close, we're already seeing more detail than was seen in most cinemas without noticing line/pixel structure, so I'm not sure greater resolution that 1080p will ever take off with Joe 42" LCD Public.

Greater resolution may come by default with other new developments (many people went HD by default just by buying a flatscreen telly).

Contrast and colour are not as great as film, but again it's not something most people even at AVF are hugely worried about.

The biggest limiting factors on BD are capacity for very, very long films + extras tied to the film (PinP, etc), the fact that it is very lossy (the picture, that is) and some discs still have digital artefacts, and that fact that it's a disc (scratches, moving parts in the player, etc).

So, the next step may well be some sort of 'film on a USB' type format, with effectively unlimited capacity, nothing to scratch, no moving parts, etc.

However, it's difficult to imagine such a machine which doesn't have the ability to add a BD drive via USB to play your old BDs.

Remember, people use their BD players to play their old DVDs and even CDs. It'd be a brave person who developed and marketed a new format which made your old CDs, DVDs and BDS obsolete.

Denons DBP2010. Could of got the newer 1611 for pretty much the same money which is 3d ready and offers SACD/DVD-A- A benefit to some and not to others but i have no plans of interest in 3d so i decided to go the better built 2010.

The 2010 is obviousley an older model, 2009 me thinks but in terms of SD and BD pq it is excellent- For SD DVD, picture quality is made even better with scaling from Anchor Bay. Although more up to date, the newer 1611 just didnt have the build quality i was after and the newer, midrange model to mine, the 2011 is £600

Retailed @ £600 and Sevenoaks are still shifting them at around £399 as clearence, Richersounds in Belfast have it on the shelf at £399 too but i haggled another hundred off them- A bargin @ £299 im sure anyone will agree. Plenty of stock at the time too which was only a few weeks back.

Food for thought....

Not a problem to anyone who buys movies and looks after them but im fed up of renting movies and them being scratched and having finger prints all over them. Some people just dont know how to look after disc or even taken them out of the case properly so the above would definitley have its advantages.

Hi Fenwick,

I have the 570 (for its wireless connection, and 1Gb memory), and was really pleased when I logged into my Lovefilm account and saw i can watch over 4,000 films instantly (well within one minute) of all different genres. I still have two Lovefilm blu rays per week through the post (which are much better than DVD's) but get to watch the online films as well, so now, we are never, ever stuck for a film to watch, so I actually record a lot fewer TV films now.

Gong to sign up to love film myself in the next few weeks. How quick do they arrive after placing order?

normally arrive within two days. Generally, I can return a disc on a Monday, and receive a repalcement by thursday - so good. But with on stream access from S570, its even better!

PS not all Lovefilm subscriptions include the Free to watch on line element - I pay for unlimited discs per month, capped to two at home at anyone time, and this does include it. Check before you subscribe.

Yea, ive been checking them out. Not too fussed about the streaming aspect, would want two at a time though. Think thats around £13 a month.

It pays for itself because my local rental outfit, Xtravision is £6 for 2 new releases for 2nights. Ive gotten 3 lots this month already.

If you don't want the online streaming check out blockbuster as they get more of the new releases
