I'm interested in feedback on this one.

I'm building an HTPC and I was wondering just how important the Case Colour is on an HTPC?

One part of me says that the case is irrelevant in that you'll be in the dark watching the movie, yet the other says it should fit in nicely with the rest of my AV gear (which is all black). My Partner obviously agrees with the latter.

    Comment and discuss?

As you say, the issue here is one of compatibility - with the views and preferences of the other inhabitants of the premises. In my case (no pun intended) it would have to be a nice dark colour to match with the other unpleasant boxes. Oh, and it would have to be as easy to use as switch it on, put the disc in and hit play.

There's an interesting topic on AVS Forum at the moment that not only goes into the case colour but one member who appears to own a manufacturing company has actually "machined" a face plate that fits one of the popular cases they appear to use so it will match his AV gear and look like a quality piece of hardware. They are now looking at taking orders for it and funding the order of the cases and faceplate almost on a co-operative basis!!

Be prepared for a long read tho', it's over 15 pages long <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

    Couch potato,

I have also been following that long thread, I like the photos here <a href="http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/010253-12.html" target="_blank">http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/010253-12.html</a>

On page 12 of the thread.

The case front looks like a Yamaha A1 or 3090 with the drop down flap.

I have not found the Antec 780B case here in England. If anyone knows of any available, buy one yourself then tell everyone else where from <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

Maybe someone should start a thread here to see how many people here would buy the case and custom front.

The more people interested, the more chance there is of someone bringing a shipment of cases to England.

The fascia is a great idea, the original post called somthing like "maybe we should build our own case" was posted as a result of me showing Kryton on AVS. If I hadn't already bought the VATX case I would have gone for this. There are already a few UK/euro people interested, a good person to see about some joint import is Phat one of the AVS HTPC forum moderators.

i would say very important, so you can put it on the rack beside all of your other seperates.

I'm surprised no-one has marketed faceplates before now, seems like you would have a bit of a monopoly, especially if you were competent enough to style it like other manufacturers devices, i.e yamaha, denon, pioneer, anodised to match.

i congratulate the person on finally doing this.

Looks are very important, something that I am beginning to appreciate (I am a Croft owner!).

I swear by my black HCPC. Black is a pain to source, inc cases, but it looks the part. Just look at Kryton, it matches Jeffs other stuff well in the photos. I have taken a different approach. My PC is in a black cube and to the casual observer looks like a small sub, anything but another beige PC. I'm glad I went black. I would do it again.

It doesn't look like a PC which is what I wanted.
