How good is all this resampling?

A PAL DVD has 576 lines, which I first resample to 720 lines (for a 720p resolution, the best available on my HS10), which then get cropped (due to overscan) and further resampled to 768 lines (native res of the pj). This hardly seem optimal although I cannot find any better way to do it since Sony didn't provide a decent 1:1 mapping [email protected] 50 hz. Has anyone out there analyzed the resampling methods employed (filter sizes etc)? How much am I losing in image quality due to this chain of resamplings?

Lets hope that the next generation of media, players and displays all stick to one set of possible resolutions, like 720 and 1080.
