How easy is it to set up an amp without osd?

Hello

I am researching amplifiers and speakers for a new system.

My screen only has HDMI inputs (well DVI actually; it is a large-ish computer monitor and I do not at present have either funds or motivation to buy a second screen) so before I go to a store to check out the amps they have, I would like to know how easy it is to set one up without the OSD? So far I have only found the Onkyo 606 in my price range (~£400) with OSD over HDMI.

I am particularly interested in the Cambridge Azur models as I listen to a lot of music but obviously it is pointless for me to check them out in-store if I'm never gonna be able to set one up properly without OSD.

So, has anybody much experience setting an amp up without the OSD, just using the LED display on the amp itself? I assume you can do this on all amps?

Thanks for your time...

we have a sony amp, did not need any OSD to set it up, just plugged it in, selected the input and away it went, this was a £300 amp so it might be a bit basic compared to what you are after

I didn't bother with OSD on my amp when I first set it up. It was a few months down the line before I hooked up a composite cable. Then when I ran out of component inputs on my TV, I used the amp to switch and therefore got the display on a permanent basis. You don't really need it, unless you have one of the high end Denons with their fancy GUI which look brilliant.

.....plus it's not the same unless you're bent over double round the back of the rack fiddling with cables, so who needs to sit back and relax in an armchair to set an amp up!? :D
