For those of you who do, how do you backup your photos whilst away? Touch wood I've never had a card failure, and until I joined this site it is something that never worried me before. However, I'd be gutted if I went on holiday and lost a load of photos due to a corrupt card so was thinking about taking something away with me so that I could back up my SD cards. I don't have the room for a laptop and so I was wondering if there's anything you can get that backs up SD cards that's much more portable?

I don't bother personally and just carry a good few cards - no backup I know - but if I did then these days I'd probably just carry a tablet with me and a card reader and external drive

    Good question.

Leave them on the card. Copy to the laptop. So I have two copies.

Carry several cards so that I don't need to remove the original.

If I have no laptop, I can use a table. Transfer off one SD Card on to the tablet. Then copy on to another SD Card.

If I get good wifi somewhere I upload to the Cloud.

There may be a widget out there that does card to card transfer.

I'll be taking the iPad, I didn't know you could transfer data from SD cards tbh. I might look into this, can they read/store RAW?

Thanks, as above I didn't know you could transfer to a tablet. I do have multiple cards, and will leave the photos on the cards also, but I wanted a back up too. Definitely going to look at transferring onto the ipad :smashin:

True, but I do have the 32GB one and doubt I'd reach that on one weeks hol :) Mind you' I'd want to put videos on for the plane journey, but they only take a couple of gig :smashin:

I didn't know about iPads. I'm not prepared to pay twice as much for the warm glow that seems to be the only benefit of buying Apple. But in Android tablets you can just buy an OTG USB cable, connect to a USB card reader with the camera's card and copy over the files. Some Android devices have a slot for a card.

This isn't always the easiest of operations. But with the right advice I'm sure you can get it to work.

The best option would be to find a way to copy the files to the Tablet and then to copy them out again to a different card, or even a portable drive if you can get one to make the connection.

Hopefully I can get the iPad route to work. Apple vs Android? You can argue till the cows come home ;)

I have 64gig ipad and stored pics on whilst I was away, I shoot in raw too, It filled up with only 700pics and I had to delete some. The other option I have used though is once on ipad I loaded them onto flickr and dropbox

On my recent holiday I took both a laptop and ipad 2, the backpack I have not only holds most of my camera gear it also has a place for a laptop. Backed up every day to the laptop and edited some whilst having an afternoon siesta! It's surprising (or not) with a digital camera how many pics you take, 700 in 10 days!
Its either that or have sufficient cards to swap out.

Thanks. I do have sufficient cards but want to back up as well. I'm definitely going to give the iPad route a whirl, but I have just remembered I've an old netbook kicking around at work somewhere, might see if that still works :)

I've transferred photo's to an ipad before, for viewing on a bigger screen than the camera, I don't think I've taken them off again so don't know how easy it is?

Not sure, but normally getting photos off is easy on Mac. If you import from SD card do they get stored in camera roll?

Must get back to work now!
