If the above fails then you can just restore it which will wipe everything. :)

You can do it on the phone:

Settings>General>Reset

To wipe everything off the iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

is wiping the same as 'restoring' ? i.e. next time you sync it will put the new firmware on it no matter what?

sort of, you can restore it as a blank slate in that case wiping, or you can restore your iphone to a previous back up

How long should a hard reset take ?
I've just done a "erase all content and settings" type reset and after 4 1/2 hours it still hadn't finished, so I pressed the sleep and home buttons to return back to the Springboard.
