I am complete newbie and am trying to put together a home cinema system to add on to a Pioneer DV575 DVD player.

I have around £600 to play with and am not sure how to split this between an amp and speakers.

I have been thinking about the Denom 1705 or Sony DB795 both at £210 and either the Mission M30i or the Mordaunt Short Premier Plus package cinema package both at around £380.

Do I need to put so much money into the speakers or do you think I am better off spending more on the amp?
Also, are there beter alternatives to the products I am looking at
I will probably use the system 50/50 for music and movies.

    Thanks very much

    Adam.

I have the DB795 and its good with both music and movies and when buying speakers you should usually spend about double the cost of the amp, so £380 fine but buy some decent speaker cable. I was using the rubbish cable i got with my old amp but when i used my new cable the sound quality had improved alot

Watch out for the buzz on the Sony though. Quite a few people have reported problems with it on here.

    Just a heads up.

For speakers you should consider the Canton series, perhaps a CD1. See this forums power buy thread. Maybe slap on a CD 50 as the Centre speaker and move the CD1's centre to the rear if you are interested in a 6.1 setup.

Denon's aren't too bad with music Ched, my old 1802 certainly wasn't embaressed at the price although obviously it won't compete with a dedicated hifi amplifier. :)

Thanks everyone for their ideas so far, the new Yamaha 657 looks great, have you seen any reviews of it yet or is it just too new?

Also, do you know the difference between the Mordaunt Short Premier and Premier Plus packages, they look similar besides the subwoofer but theres over a £100 between them (that would give me the extra cash for the 657)

the premier plus has the ms309 sub instead of the 308. I have the 308 and although the 309 is probably a lot better, im very happy with mine for movies, it seems to have a lot more power than 80 watts sometimes. Slightly disappointed with it as far as music is concerned, simply because I prefer the bass from my floorstanders.

If I were you, id get the azur 540r and the premier plus pack with the money you save!

Does this have time delay function? Would you chose this or the Denon 2105? Or even the 1905 which has 3 component in instead of 2 that the yammy has :(

I bought my Sony MP3 from them and it turned up no probs. They tend to stock European spec though, so you may need a plug convertor if they dont supply one already.

It also mentions up-conversion to component - and 720p? Is the latter correct? Could it take a component source from a DVD and upscale to 720p?

Last question I promise.. I assume that AV receivers do not take RGB scart? Therefore would you lose quality if you took Sky RGB into the composite of the receiver and upscale to component?

Yes, composite upscaled to component is still composite quality. Its just used so you have less connections to your plasma/tv etc.

Best bet is to get an RGB->Component converter or plug the scart directly into your TV if your budget is tight.

    Ok, now I'm confused.

I have been advised that its not worth getting the Mordaunt Short Premier Plus package and should save the cash and and just go for the Premiers.
Thats fine but should I save the money or put it towards better stands and cable or a better amp eg Yammy 750SE??

When I was doing my research into the Mordaunt short Premier system, the reviews I read said the 'plus' system was worth the extra. This is one such review:

    http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/outputpdf.php?file=WHC/200409/080_WHC_0904.pdf

I've got the 309 subwoofer in my system and think it's great. As it's my first system and I wasn't able to compare it with the 308 I can't say how much better it is ---- I went with the review advice and am very satisfied.

Its definately top of my list at the moment. I was originally looking into the 650, which dropped as low as £220 a while back, but many places are only listing the new models now. Still, £301 is a bloody good price. If its anything like the 650 (logic says it should be better) then it will be great for what i want it for. Mainly watching movies, which the yammy is supposed to be better at than music.
I think ill be going with the cantons too. I dont really want anything bigger than the CD1 setup, and might take ppls advice on here and go for the cd50 centre, and move the original to the rear.

I was gonna go for this amp and probably the CD 22 pack, fancy the CD 100s for the fronts, CD 50 for the centre and some smaller ones for the rears
