How do i silence the iPad?

Just bought an iPad Pro 11" and it doesn't have a mute switch like my iPhone does.
How do i turn the sounds off?
I have turned the volume down on the side, but notifications still come through.
I can put it into 'do not disturb' mode, this also puts my phone into dnd mode too (which i dont want).
I could go into settings and disable sounds for certain notifications, but this is a pain turning them on/off and may also do the same for my phone (not tried it yet so unsure).
If i swipe down from the top/right, its showing that the volume is off, but i am still getting notifications through.
I thought that turning the volume down would silence the iPad, but apparently not.

Not sure if you've figured this out already, but
Pull down from top right for the control centre
Tap the alarm bell so it turns red with a line through it - this will come up "Silent Mode : On"
