Is there a way for PVR with USB e.g. Topfield et al - to connect to an ethernet and appear as some computer device (shared drive?) that a PC on same network could then pull up the .mpeg and burn movies to DVD disc?

In the case of the Topfield 5800 you can do this with a modified NSLU2 USB NAS adapter and some command line software: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Puppy/HomePage - you should also have a look at the forums on www.toppy.org.uk for more info. Using the NSLU2 you can get a command line to control the toppy (a program called puppy) or create an FTP server for transferring to/from the PVR.
