is there a way of getting surround sound from a ps2?
Yes, but you will need to have an amp/TV with Dolby Surround decoding, or a Dolby Digital decoder to hear 5.1 material. And plenty of speakers, of course .
What setup do you have/are you thinking of buying?
With a Dolby Prologic processor/amplifier connect the PS2 up by the phono connections. Maybe you have one on a midi system or something. This will give you Dolby Surround Sound.
If you have a digital surround sound processor/amp, connect the PS2 by its optical out connection. This will, in theory, give you full Dolby Digital and DTS sound where available. However, I've only come across two games that use DTS in gameplay, and none that use Dolby Digital in anything other than FMV sequences.
That's because the PS2 can't encode DD in real-time (TTBOMK). It can do real-time DTS, but the only people who've found a way to make it work without using hideous amounts of processor time are EA (so far).
I have a PS2 connected to my amp via the optical out but I can't get DD (Metal Gear Solid 2) or DTS (SS Tricky) . Surely the amp should detect when these signals are being received and show the relevant DD/DTS in the display?
Appreciate any help guys
With MGS2 it's only in cut scenes, not during gameplay. You'll have to select the digital soundtracks with these games too, or they'll just send out normal stereo sound.
NHL 2002 has a menu option for you to select sound format. DD & DTS are listed. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm expecting to get DTS over my optical cable when I give it a go.
I hadn't appreciated that you could get DTS decoded in game on the PS2 and not DD.
You have to ensure your PS2 is set up to pump out DD/DTS.
Load in a DVD (movie not a game) and then press stop once.
From the menu select Setup and then Audio Setup.
Make sure all digital options are on and then eject the disk to save the settings.
Also make sure the digital output is turned on in the console setup - displayed when no disk is inserted.
You should now get 5.1 sound flying out of all speakers
thanks guys, i'll look into it
SSX Tricky has an option in the menu to output DTS. It will do this irrespective of the options you have set for movie playback.
Really? It doesn't work for me. I have to make sure all the digital options are on to get DTS or DD sound out of my games.
It's a bummer though cause I don't have a DD/DTS amp in my bedroom only downstairs. So when I have the PS2 upstairs (it's normal resting place ) I have to set all the digital signals off so that I can increase the volume setting for DVD playback (which is a major pain - why couldn't they have set the volume at the +2 mark from the off???)
If I don't turn them all back on and I plug it into my amp I get no DD/DTS signal I have to set all the options up again.
Weird. Although there are different versions of the PS2 and maybe the software changed in that respect between yours and mine.
