A DVD-R failed on my Panasonic E50 but in the PC's LG4040 with DirectCD I
managed to recover the DVD but had to re-format also. Is there anyway to
reformat properly to get the full 4.7GB useable as directCD uses about 600MB
    of data

Have you tried doing a full erase?

My mistake - you said DVD-R. There's nothing you can 'undo' on a DVD-R. Once written, that's it.

    For DVD-RW (etc) (i.e. re-writables)........

I don't have Roxio installed any more, so I can't tell you exactly (by reference) but IIRC there was a tool in the DCD format utility to erase a re-writable disc in the drive.
