    Hi all

This has only just started, I've been in my house for several years. I recently had the upstairs replastered with new skirting boards and arhivtrave fitted. It appears that since then every night in the early hours there are really load cracking/popping noises that sound like they are coming from the walls or floor?

The first night it happened I nearly leapt out of my skin as I thought someone was walking up the stairs. It doesn't seem to do it during the day and I haven't a clue what it is. The reaso I mention the redecorating is I can only assume it has something to do with that, but I don't know why?

Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone have an idea to what it could be?

It's probably a door hinge somewhere.

Plaster and skirting board drying out.

I bet it does happen during the day - noises always sound louder at night.

I was going to ask whether blood was coming out of the walls and I see you are already ahead of me.

If it's only happening at night then it might be the drop in temperature causing the beams to creak.

In our last house in the summer we got really loud cracks and pops in the evening. We eventually worked out it was the plastic shower base expanding and contracting against the wall. It only happened in the summer so the hat weather the last week might have had something to do with it....

Were you eating a bowl of snap, crackle and pop when you heard these noises?

Reminds me of the period of a few months after we bought a mahogany bureau at a local fair in Worcester. It was made by an outfit in Sheffield from solid mahogany that they acquired from redundant Post offices in and around the Yorkshire region. They took the old counters and recycled the wood into furniture. Only problem was that after several months, when things warmed up and the joints started stretching and flexing, when a glue joint gave it sounded like a rifle shot right there in the room. Modern manufacturing meets top quality, well seasoned and rock solid mahogany. Something had to give and it was the joints. :D

The Samsung LCD hanging up in my bedroom does that, every night it sounds like it's falling off the wall.
