I bought this from movietyme (craig moved heaven and earth to get for me :smashin: ) however, they couldn't get me the HK R3 in time so Craig asked me if i wanted a Thai version instead - i said yes that would be cool. so in Monday it arrived  popped it in the player went to the language option to find 3 options:

    1. DD Manderin 5.1
    2. Thai DTS
    3. DD Thai 5.1

Now as the review on this forum states (and a number of others that i've read ) the DTS soundtrack is a killer. i selecte it and away we went. then the penny dropped!! - Its dubbed!!!!! the Thai DTS is dubbed - of course it is! I cant watch dubbed films - it's horrible.

so i found myself looking at a screen with english subtitles but all the lip movements being out of sync - very strange!

So the question is am i being pedantic in not wanting to watch it in this way. so should i

    A. order another copy with the right DTS track (itys only £7.99)
    B. watch it in DD
    C. watch the DTS version and get so drunk i dont notice the dubbing :D

    I think you should -

No, it's normal. Down here quality doesn't count, it gotta be fast and cheap, thus no effort will be made (generally).

However, did you see the whole movie already? I don't like it at all. Hero was ok, CTHD was great - but House of Flying Daggers is IMHO poor. Thus I recommend you watch it first before buying another DVD.

No Renier, i've not watched it yet - but HERO is one of my films of the year - i know it has its flaws but its just so beautiful to look at and the sound - while it may be over the top - still send shivers down my spine.

i'm planning to watch "daggers" on saturday night so maybe i'll hold off until monday.

    Amen to that :smashin:

Has to be one of the most beautiful films of all time. Every single frame of that film is *perfectly* composed.

Shame about the occasionally ropey cgi

Hero was visually stunning and while House of Flying Daggers has some nice scenes it doesn't come close, IMHO.
What spoils it for me is the, how should I put it, excessive use of those traditional techniques that are typical for Chinese Kung-fu movies. I won't say more as not to spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie yet.

I've got to say I preferred HotFD to Hero. They are both excellent films, but the emotion of the story in Daggers did it for me. They both contain amazing visual and sound experiences but The Echo Game in Daggers....well GaryD, you've just got to see it (and hear it!)

    Enjoy!

I've held-off buying HotFD because the only version that seems to be available is R3, which is supposed to be crap. Isn't this going to be on general release in the UK anytime soon? Is there an R1 or R2 version available?

There wont be R2 release for a while, as its only comming to UK cinemas in December.
Im holding off buying the R3 and am going to see it at the cinema. This gives my little bit to the box office and may encouage them to show more Far East releases. :)

Well...... I've watched it!! after the long wait and many emails to Craig at movietyme i've finally watched it.

WOW :D  What a fantastic film, i loved everything about it, i'm not going to say that i enjoyed it anymore than "Hero" or any less - i just loved it. As most reviews seem to have pointed out the print is quite poor, i'm not sure if its any better on the Thai version than the standard HK edition but it wasn't that bad - i've seen worse (cough: blade runner R2, cough).

we watched with the Dolby track engaged as we couldn't get on with dubbing for THAI DTS and i have to say the DD track blew me away. I went back and watched certain bits again (the test, the bamboo fight etc) in DTS and put the sound up to 11 it was incredible, just incredible.

all in all, a worthy purchase.

    Thanks Craig :smashin:

I watched House of FD last night - R3 in Mandarin DTS and it was a stunning soundtrack. Top demo material. Simply awesome. The bass whilst not particularly low is sublime as is the overall soundstage. The picture quality wasnt as bad as I expected either.

I have also got the 2 disc version of Hero but havent had a chance to see it yet.

HOFD is superb - I watched it Thursday night - R3 Mandarin DTS - I prefer it over Hero...

The print is a bit ropey at the beginning but I didnt notice it at all after about 10 mins - the film was so engrossing!

Incrediable cinematography, wasn't it? One hell of a story and a film as well IMO.

A near perfect 9/10 from me for this one!

I ordered this today from CD WOW, R3 Mandarin DTS track. - £5.99!!!! with the usual routes!

That is nearly as cheap as my UCI cinema!

Am starting chinese language classes soon so may be able to watch without subtitles one day!
