After a wait and not watching it on Five, the R1 boxset arrived today. 3 double sided and (i assume) double layered disks.

while that in itself is a disppointment. the real disappointment is the picture format. The box states that its 1:78 but it squashed  My Viera has no option to change the aspect ratio through it's componant inputs. so i'm stuffed with a flat picture.

So is it me or has the disk been knobed up?

    OK, checked mine last night.

Dont know if its supposed to be anamorphic or not , but mine isnt. The menus are but the picture on my discs seems to be just a standard 1.85 letter booxed format that you have to zoom in on. This in itself is not a really big problem as the picture is more than watchable when zoomed in on, But I would have expected it to be an anmorphic transfere

Gary, if you cant change the aspect ratio on your Viera, that could mean the disc is faulty. However, check that your DVD player has not been acidently swithched to progressive mode(if it has this option). When the Viera plasma recives a progressive feed through componenet, it auto swithces to wide mode. If the disc in question is not an anamorphic one then the picture looks squashed. This sounds like your problem. Let me know what you think.

    OK,
re the aspect ratio, I have just found this in my vast, vast , vast cupboard of knowledge.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has made all twenty-two episodes that comprise HOUSE, M.D.: SEASON ONE available on DVD in a 1.78:1 wide screen presentation, which sadly lacks the anamorphic enhancement for 16:9 displays. This is a fairly major mistake on the part of Universal, whether intentional or unintentional and will make many question whether or not they should purchase this DVD collection. In this day and age, every new television series designed for broadcast in widescreen hi def should be released on standard DVD with the 16:9 display enhancement.

So it would seem that the aspect on the DVDs is how it is suppossed to be.

Gary, this still leads me to think that a progresive mode has been switched on , on the DVD player. Did you say that you can change the aspect if viewed through scart? if so, then it would seem that the disc is ok, and again point back to the plasma receving a progresive feed.
Of course I could be wrong :D :)

Dave, yet again you prove i'm not worthy.

I've been watching prog scan pictures, since i hung "our vera" on the wall. I dont know that it was prog scan causing the problem - unfortunatly i'm not at home until half 8 tonight, so wont be able to check until then.

trhe the reason for the scart thing is that i know i can change the picture size through scart but not through Componant (but that been cleared up now.

seems strange that they didn't make it anamorphic, tut.

i'll try it tonight and post about it later - but it does seem logical dave. once again thanks :smashin:

    Hi,

On the topic of "House", did anyone who watched the episode on Five last night, notice the cameo from show co-creator, producer and co-director Bryan Singer (as a director called Bryan) in the opening scene, pre-credits, AND the section where Dr Chase (Jesse Spencer's character) mentioned that the disease consists of the "usual suspects...", the film that Bryan Singer first directed!?

I thought that they were fun touches, and another excellent episode as well.

It does seem bizarre not to offer an anamorphic release in this day and age, almost a kick back to the laserdisc era of letterbox movies.
Still pretty cheap for a full season and the PQ is decent on botht he LCD and CRT so all in all I'm happy, well apart from having flippers!
    :)

    Hi,

Something tells me these two issues will be rectified for the Season 1 Region 2 releases! ;)

Yep at twice the price and assuming there is a R2 release at a future point.
The reason I imported my first DVD player and bought R1 exclusive for two years or so still remains, for the most part R2 are poor imitations(although vastly improved compared to the early years), often delayed and over priced:)

    Hi,

Touche! :D But, in all seriousness, wouldn't you prefer to wait to buy the (hopefully) superior Region 2 version, and simply buy-it online, where it shouldn't set you back more than £25?

Or maybe "impatience" is a virtue, nowadays?! :rotfl:

For the most part the R1 releases are upto a standard you would expect, the fact that the presentation of House comes as a surprise indicates how unusual it is these days.

Would an anamorphic release (maybe single side disk) be worth waiting for even though it would cost 50% as much again?
Hmmm, maybe but there is simply no contest when the R1 and R2 have a very similar spec, price always wins and when the R1 is months ahead then a no brainer:)
