Went with the wife a couple of years ago and stayed in H1898 which was very nice and is on Las Ramblas. Le Meridien is right opposite and looked good, had a fantastic wine bar with live music which we preferred to H1898 bar.

Probably not what you are looking for but I stayed in the the Kabul hostel some years back, lots of friendly people there. Alternatively try the lonely planet thorntree.

Hmm the 3am thing wasn't a problem for me then I was there I was mostly up to 3. Also if you are going in the middle of summer it does get really hot there, approaching 40 in the middle of the day when I was there so you might want to check if the place has air conditioning.

Some nice hotels listed here which include all prices and styles. Like others have said I think that la Ramblas is not what it used to be.

Has la Ramblas gone down hill then? I was there in 2001 or 2 and thought it was quite pleasant, the only thing dragging it down was the English stag parties.

I'd recommend Hostels if you are interested, its all i seem to stay in when i go to Europ on hols. Lot's of friendly/interesting people if you want to mingle or if not you can just keep yourself to yourself. Some of the hostels i have stayed in, particulary in Lisbon and Prague have been pretty much boutique hotels in my opinion :D And onlu something like £15/20 a night  i was in a group of 5 or 6 though. Hostels FTW
