...is highly recommended. Just finished watching it and can honestly say i was blown away. Which is very rare these days !! I guess i was just not expecting such an exciting, taut thriller starring Bruce Willis. Lets face it - its been a while since he was on top form. However, i had heard good things about it so i took a risk and bought it anyway.
Turned out to be a good decision !!

I can also safely say that its by far his best film to date imho (though have yet to see Sin City).
Yes - its even better than 'Die Hard'. His character in Hostage is harder, darker and much more believable than his usual 'wise cracking cop' roles and the film is all the better for it.
The supporting cast do a great job too - and most are faces you wont really know either - which is no bad thing.

The plot has so many suprises and twists and turns that its a real thrill ride almost from beginning to end. It doesn't pull its punches either. It is quite violent - though is also well written and directed - so it never becomes mindless or gratuitous. Its actually one of those rare films that before you know it the credits are rolling and you wonder why its all over so quickly !!
    (actually its about 104 mins)

I won't go into too many details as i don't want to spoil it for those that have yet to see it. Lets just say you are in for a treat.

The video transfer is also excellent and looked superb on my 32"crt being fed from my 575a via RGB scart. Blacks are black as night and colours are rich and natural. The D.O.P. did such a great job lighting this film - making it gorgeous to look at.

The sound track is also worthy of mention as its powerful and very well mixed - with a dark brooding soundtrack to accompany the excellent FX.

The bonus was it only cost me £7 as part of a 5 for 35 deal at Blockbuster. They are selling off lots of their ex-rentals - though it took a while to find some good disks that hadn't been too abused. Hostage wasn't an ex-rental though - it was a trade-in - so it was in excellent condition.

Have to say Hostage is one of the best films i've seen this year. Its well worth at least a rental - though i'm glad i bought it as its definately worthy of a few more viewings.

    Just my 2c !! :)

it was early when i posted this morning but i've just noticed the above :rotfl:

    some people are easily pleased.

best acting job by BW is "unbreakable" not everyone likes it but is performance is great.

best action role: The Last Boy Scout - very funny and very loud - great movie :smashin:

Hostage however is IMHO much much worse than either of them.

Razor - good too see my influence is rubbing off :smashin: (you'll hate everything soon :smashin: morning matey :D )

Am yet to se this, avoided it at the cinema due to average reviews, but may rent it for a friday night popcorn flick.

Best Bruce film, probably Pulp Fiction... but may not be classed as a 'bruce film' due to the ensemble cast.

Love Die Hard  and LBS is excellent too! Also Sixth Sense is worth a mention. :)

He was good in Unbreakable, i watched it at the cinema really enjoyed it and then bought the DVD, strangely enough i've never had the urge to watch the DVD. hmm, maybe one for the weekend.

Am yet to see Sin City

....what a jaded lot you are...did anyone on here actually like Hostage ???

(just to check i dont need a 'taste adjustment' i checked the general consensus of Hostage on imdb.com and it seems the (incredibly bright, intelligent, knowledgable) contributors on there are mostly with me on this one...phew !!) ;)

There's 2 reviews of Hostage in the DVD Reviews on this site (IIRC Both myself and Chris McEneany scored it 7 out of 10)

That may make you feel better Media_Man ;)

One man's meat Gary........Besides I've seen some of your scores that have been as you say "highly questionable".

Still, if you wish to change the "highly questionable" reviews and scores and take a break from Blockbusters, you can always apply to review.........

Hostage was okay but nothing to blow your socks off. Thinking about it, it would of been great if BW's socks did blow up to ad a bit of humour to it. Its not a film thats going to be great for repeated showings unlike die hard

in my opinion my scores are spot on :D hang on, let me think about that.......

i cant review, i wish i could. i've written several reviews but never submitted them as i dont think my prose is up to scratch.

However, this will come as a shock i know, but i like to express an opinion from time to time. And i like to debate that with other people - to think that i may encourage someone to watch something new is good. hey i'm even encouraging Razor to be a bit critical of what he watches (he thought Hostage was average too) :smashin:

I like the reviews section Seth and i know that dispite what people may think its a thankless task that you do, and i'm sure you've had things you reallly dont want to watch. i love debating with people - long may you continue to annoy me, make me smile, make me laugh and challenge me.

    :smashin:

    Gary

Maybe one day i'll send you one to laugh at. :D

 Again Dave we agree. This is one movie I would love to see. The first Die Hard had me on the edge of my seat the first time I saw it. I loved the other 2 movies as well.

Die Hard made Bruce, he owes them another movie. :lease:

    Me, Dave S & Gary D watching a movie.

    ok,
just been checking my vast, vast , vast knowledge banks :D

    here we go.

February 24, 2005... Empire Online talked with Bruce Willis about the fourth "Die Hard" film and he had a few more tidbits to throw out. Willis says that, Doug Richardson took a shot at "Die Hard 4.0" and it’s a good idea. McClane’s retired, he’s not a cop anymore. The script will be done by summer and they want to shoot it in the fall. "It’s completely different from the other three films." He went on to say that, "...it has something to do with computers…”

    and.

On the Fri, March 11th edition of THE VIEW, Bruce said that DIE HARD 4.0(now apparently the official title) would come out in 2006 and that one of the characters will be his grown up son last seen in the original. They are finishing up the script now, he added.

so all is not lost, we may well yet see old brucey boy back in full on action mode :smashin:
