I am skint but my car is driving me MAD it sounds pants so i am thiningk of an upgrade, I have noticed that the OEM speakers do seem useless so my plan is to use a set of these

    http://www.canton.de/www/index.php4?pg_id=26,30,qs2.160,2,en

    for fronts and

    http://www.canton.de/www/index.php4?pg_id=26,30,qs2.130,2,en

    for rears (eventually/possibly)

Not the most obvious choice and i still need to get prices.......... Too keep it as "stock" as possible i want use a HU for all amplifier requirements (yes i knoe AMPs are better  ) So reconmendations anybody?

I'm skintish and need to keep the rear load space free of all guff, the Car is not exactly MINT, but i do plan to replace the horrid plastic wood centre console with something nicer and perhpas try fitting a snooper S3 to the OEM display housing (that would be cool!!!) long term project:

    HU requirements:
    Power speakers
    CD WMA MP3
    Aux input
    compatible with steering wheel controls
    CHEAP £150 ish
    Shortlist
    Pioneer DEHP6700MP
    Sony CDXF5550
    Kenwood KDC-W5031
Woodstock DAB52 (pushing budget but i do like the Radio)
So come on guys what do you reckon? Do able? Waste of time and money?

I am after a clear sound, decent bass but not wanting to rattle windows down the high street (2.0Di does that already!!!)

I sat in my mates Golf today, he had an Alpine HU with 45w x4 and some Sony Xplod components and I must say the sound was pretty good for what was there. Considering they are the same 6.5inch size they dropped well and you could easily live with them if you don't want to bounce coins of your roof. Getting to the point your requirements are very do-able.

I'm planning another install involving amps woofers etc in my new car(Seat Leon FR 150TDI). I've temporarily put a sub box and amp to supliment the OEM 6.5inch component speakers but it is too big and I also need my boot space. That is why I am planning a fibreglass subbox build on the side wall which might be a suggestion to you. You can get them ready built look up stealthboxz

I have had reasonably loud systems and I feel I am past that. I just want something that sounds good and unfortunately the OEM speakers, especially the tweeters, sound like an angry wasp at anything other than moderate levels.

I would be interested in finding out how much those Cantons are when you find out.

horny i bought the pioneer deh7700mp the other day and can't complain does everything i want it to so i am definately a fan of pioneer but its one weakness is the radio!! out of your other choices i would go for the sony but it doesnt play wma. have you looked at the alpine range of units, they play mp3/wma you can add aux in and stalk controls and the radio reception is excellent. as far as the snooper goes i wouldn't bother, they sting you on the subscription for updates buy a tomtom go sat nav and download all the speed camera locations onto that then you have sat nav and a camera detector in one unit.

Thanks guys far more sensible replies than i was getting at talkaudio, alan i have seen stealth boxes but being an estate i have very little in the way of nooks...... the only feasible location would be a short throw unit in the tailgate!!
as far as i can see deming is null and void with car audio as unless you can find the same car with same bits in it you havent got a chance in hell of a realistic demo.....

    Hi..

Saw your thread at talk audio...I'm just changing my hu.. so I may have my kenwood mask up for sale here this week ;)

I have always used the amps in the hu as I could not be bothered with the whole sub/amp thing in the car. I usually upgrade the speakers (if it just you in it most of the time.. save your money and leave the rear speakers alone just do the fronts) from stock.. and just did that this week in my focus. Its always sounded pretty good :)

Put it this way.. I got some mb quart speakers from ebay for ~£30 to replace the stock ford ones... sound superb to my humble ears.. only really changing the hu because I fancy a change. A amp would be good if I wanted to rock the house or runs thumping subs.. but I'm not bothered !

    Cheers

Horneydragon - With regard to sub placement. I had an Astra Estate and I had a sealed sub in the boot area, a fairly simple affair just a sub box with the amp screwed on the top. I then made up a short lead terminated in an IEC socket for the power and remote lead from the amp and then ran the cables along the side of the car and terminated it with a matching IEC plug. Then all I had to do was unplus the phono lead and the IEC lead and whip it out when I needed to boot space.

hmm went and had a chat to the manager at sextons he was less than enthusiastic about everything, He did reconmend Alpine for a the better AMPs in a HU but none of the staff had much insight into anything other than manufacturer blurb on "watts" I am not feeling too cofident in there advice they did say i would need custom MDF monts to get 165mm drivers in the doors.......... so I am looking at £50+vat for the speakers to be fitted............(they didnt mention VAT the first time i spoke to them :( ) I mentioned that their prices were not as competitive as they could be mention Car audio direct and MCS-direct and got a whole torraid of reasons not to save 40% on the cost of the HU!!!!!

all ford stereos use the same fasia plate so one from a puma will fit in a focus as will a fasia plate from an escort. personally i think that the fasia plate from an escort fits better in the focus

Hornydragon - You can have my KDC-W9027 for £270 if you like, I'll throw in the matching 10 disc changer for that. The matching stalk adaptor set from autoleads will set you back about £25 (I know I'm just about to order it!!), you would loose the in car display but tbh as this display on this baby is massive you won't miss it. MP3 and WMA out of the box, plus SRS WOW, etc, etc, etc.......

Horny - This H/U still retails for £300 on it's tod, a new 10discer would set you back around another £120. It's a deal, its a steal, it the sale of the f***ing century :)

As to experience, really just a dabbler, I've always tried to keep my car looking as stock as possible and practical too.

I've just bought a Scenic (old man now!!) and will just kit it with my 'portable' sub, the kenny h/u and some custom coaxials for behind the front door pods, no cutting, mdf for me.

Happy to give you some pointers on install whare I can.

all i want to do is get a HU that plays WMA/MP3 on CD sounds good, i fancy changing the front speakers as i am not sure Vauxhall really pay any attention to quality of the speakers and being into AV i have heard the difference even cheap but proper speakers can make!! I dont want huge subs AMP different batterys and all that, just a nice clean sound why is this so hard????

Thanls for the offer but too much £££ for me!

I do have a set of custom fit's for a Vauxhall (well fitted my old '97 Astra) comes complete with the proper autoleads speaker adaptors and the wiring plus to save you hacking about the OEM wiring loom. What car have you got??. I'm sure we could sort out a bearable price ;)

The Scenic pods are smaller so they are now spare.
