Home network laptop cant access desktop computer

Saw a similar post from 2009 so that one has timed out but issue was not resolved anyway
So I will ask about my similar problem
Desktop runs vista
Laptop runs Windows 8 pro
I can access my laptop from desktop no problems
I can see the desktop from my laptop but when trying to access it fails
Do a diagnostics with no success and advised to contact ISP
It did used to work when I had vista on the laptop but somewhere along the line it stopped working.
I thought when I did a clean install and upgraded to Windows 8 it might work again but this is not the case.
Any suggestions appreciated

If you had updated both to windows 8 or windows 7 you could have setup a homegroup and thats the easy way to resolve the problem, when a PC joins the homegroup it gets access to whatevers shared by each PC automatically.

Windows Vista doesn't support homegroups so you need to go the old school way (meant for linux but steps are the same) of setting up network shares or follow workaround guides which outline how to get Windows vista to connect to your win 8 pc as the homegroup.

Hi
Thanks for the reply, I have no problem accessing my Laptop ( Windows 8 ) from my Desktop ( Vista ) although from what you say, and the article in the link I should have, but that route is no problem.
Its the other way round, I cant access my Desktop ( Vista ) from my Laptop ( Windows 8 )
I used to be able to network the two when they both run vista but that stopped working for some unknown reason months before I upgraded
But I'll look through the link and see if there is any connection, so thanks again for the link
Confused as to why it works in one direction only
Any other suggestions appreciaed

My guess is the Vista PC needs to have the proper permissions set which is why the Win8 PC cant access it. Thats why you have to go the old route of manually setting up network shares with the correct permissions so the laptop is allowed entry to the desktop. It could be you have some third party anti-virus/firewall software on the Vista PC that is blocking network access as well.

You can get the Win8 upgrade for £50 on Amazon UK, that might be the easiest way to go with the Vista PC, update it then create a homegroup.

Thanks for replying
As I already had the problem when both systems were running Vista I am not convinced an upgrade will fix it, but of course it could do nothing but help.
What you do get is error code 0x80070035 and research shows that there are many people with this problem
There are many suggested solutions but none that are consistent, and none I have found that work
I do suspect it could be as you say a problem caused by third party anti-virus/firewall software
Both systems are running BT's McAfee Net+ I have tried turning off the firewalls on both computers without success
It is frustrating to see the desktop computer on the laptop only to be told to check the spelling of the name, or that there might be a problem with the network, when you try to access it
Diagnostics fails to resolve and details reports error code 0x80070035
