I would like to know if its possible to use a 5.1 processor / amp with the following uses:

    1. In "3 Stereo" mode, i.e. just with the front speakers and centre speaker. In a situation where you don't have the option to set up your rear speakers.

    2. Normal stereo mode, if you just wanted to connect a CD player and listen to music.

I'm fairly new to home cinema and not sure about current good models, so can someone suggest some processors and amps, or all-in-one receivers. I'm looking for good sound quality as I want to listen to my CD's through the system. I would probably have a separate CD player.

My budget for processor / amp combination or receiver would be between £500 - £800.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Thanks

All the receivers I've had, and my current MC-8B processor have an onscreen setup menu and you just tell it exactly what speakers are connected. I would therefore think that most if not all receivers/processors could be set up for just the 3 front speakers and no surrounds. For CD listening you just set the CD input to stereo and the centre speaker will not be used.

    Mark.

What is the main difference between a Home Cinema Amplifier and Receiver?

    Thanks

Receivers have a built in tuner, amplifiers don't.
