I should have turned this quest into a blog it's been a while in the making.

As I've posted before I'm creating a home cinema set up in my living room. A deal with the lady means I now have a 7k budget but am not allowed to make drastic changes- the living room must still be a living room at the end of it... And not a cinema.

I'm looking at a pioneer sc-lc86 for the Amp and need the right speakers. I'm a picky git and takes me ages to decide.

I've been looking at MA golds/ rx8s etc. I've also been looking at MK sounds 150s although I'm a little confused between MK as in mksound, m&k and ken himself. Are all these interlinked in some way? I want the best I can get for my buck! I do have a BK monolith+ sub that I've yet to use.

    Still looking for inspiration :)

I would also listen to PMC speakers as well given your budget. The new twenty series are good performers but could also look at the FBis too.

Hi Arkyboy, welcome to the forums:smashin:

M&K went into administration around 2007. As a result, MK Sound was launched with some of the old M&k staff and Ken Kreisel set about his own business..and has recently launched his new subwoofers and is shortly launching his new speakers.

The Ken Kreisel speaker thread is here:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/speakers/1156589-ken-kreisel-comeback-3.html

And features some pictures of his new speakers and other bits of info:smashin:

Based on the SCLX85, the SCLX86 will be a good choice, and possibly one of the best receivers given the speakers that you are looking at. I'm assuming your budget is to include the SCLX86?

I'll leave Ken's speakers to one side for now as they're due for release. Over the past year I've found two hi-fi brands/ranges that excel with movies as well as music - the PMC Twenty series and the KEF R series. Both are quite different in their presentation, but one or the other should suit most people's tastes. Anybody who's looking for M&K/MK Sound style movie presentation should look at the PMC Twenty series, as from my experience they're very similar tonally and as far as detail is concerned. The KEF's are a little more laid back and sound fuller, but don't lack any detail, and are particularly strong in the imaging/soundfield department.

Although I don't think it was ever confirmed who or how many...

Thanks.. So looking at both of these again there's an array of speakers. If I went for now 5.0 what centre, fronts and rears should I go for with these? My BK monolith+ is brand new and not used yet so I'm sure it will do for now and possibly add a Kk one later as they do look great!

    Thanks again

Which range are you referring to?

You may find the MA's a little bright when pairing with the Pioneer. I switched to an Arcam after auditioning, but it's all personal taste. I didn't hear the KEF series but did the PMCs and preferred the Arcam/MA combo. :)

The Pioneer's X-Curve facility will tail off any excitable treble that any speakers may have :)

Not heard any of the following but are all in the £3-4k bracket for a 5.1 system if you look around, the Focals always get good comments on here, are good value for money and IMHO are the best looking piece of furniture -

    AE Radiance 3
Focal 800 5.1 (incl 826 fronts) - recommend often on this site
B&W CM9 Theatre (What Hifi Award winner)
    PMC GB1+DB1 system
    M&K 950 THX

But as is always the recommendation on this forum, get down to a dealer and let your ears decide remebering to use your prefered amp in all cases if possible.

With a healthy budget like yours I'd probably look at...

    Onkyo 818 amp...

    Home Cinema Amplifiers Onkyo TXNR818 | hifix.co.uk

    Kef R700 fronts...

    Floor Standing Speakers Kef R700 | hifix.co.uk

    Kef 600C centre...

    Centre Speakers Kef R600C | hifix.co.uk

    Kef R300 rears...

    Bookshelf Speakers Kef R300 | hifix.co.uk

Then use your Monolith subwoofer as it should work nicely with that lot.

You may get on better adding a power amp at a later stage although the 818 is supposed to be a stunning amp/pre amp!

I'd go a bit higher on the receiver than the 818.

Can't fault the Kef R Series recommendations but would also look at the Monitor Audio Gold GX range.

As I said I'd add a power amp at a later stage but the feedback on the 818 is superb and the R series don't need crazy power to get them going.

Thanks for all the comments so far folks. I've kind of got my heart set on the lx86 as it seems to tick all my boxes. The Onkyo 818 looks nice but is a little lower down the scale than i was looking for perhaps (please correct me if i'm wrong here)

DavidF i was referring to both ranges- as there are differing fronts etc in each range?

*** i will take a peak through those recommendations thanks.

The difficult part for me is the auditioning. I live in Telford, Shropshire and have been unable to find anywhere relatively close that stock these various items. i do get all around the midlands in Leicester and Nottingham. Anyone have suggestions or should i travel further afield and make a day of it or something. At this price i guess i really dont want to be buying blind... (or deaf as the case my be)

If you are dropping nearly 3k on fronts alone, then I'd suggest at least hearing those with your chosen receiver.
