Looking for a excellent recording/mastering of Holst the Planets. I've got HDCD decoder so ideally would prefer a HDCD disc.

    Cheers

Slightly off track Nathan in that it's not HDCD, but I've a DTS 5.1 CD recording of the planets which I bought from Vivante several years ago.

Conducted by Andre Previn, it's the LPO I think. There are probably better 2 channel recordings but the ambient effect on this disc is great, and the LFE really gets the sub going at times with the tympani and large brass!

Incidentally you might want to give Vivante's website a butcher's to see if they have an HDCD recording as they have a large selection. Check out www.vivante.co.uk

Just found it- it's under the 5.1 listing (excel file)

I would prefer 2 channel really, unless multi-channel audio is much better?

I take it any CD player outputs DTS CD audio (digital out?)

My DVD player doesn't output DTS DVD's.

Nathan, I've just had a look on their list but in Excel format and it's on there under Holst. In fact there are two DTS recordings - one by the LSO (reference 1029) and the other by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (reference 80466), £21.95 each. Couldn't see a HDCD recordnig though as you say.

Ah, you've just replied whilst I was replying!!

You're right, any CD player can output a DTS bitstream via it's digital out.

I think it is better. I recently tested DSotM DTS CD transfer and it very pleasantly surprised Uncle Eric and me. Definitly better that 2 channels. Check here.

Amazon.com lists 3 disks is you search for 'Holst the Planets dts'.

Is that for 2 channel AND 5.1 then (DTS from CD digital out)?

If my DVD player can't output DTS for DVD's, will it output DTS from CD's?

Noticed there are two versions on Vivante's site- what orchestra are better- and which has the best recording?

Not for everyone but synth version by Isao Tomita is fantastic if it's your bag, DVD-A version is particularly noteworthy.

CD player with digital out thinks of DTS as 2-channel PCM stream. It outputs as normal. Your receiver will recognise that the stream is not PCM but DTS and will decoded accordingly.

    Nathan,

You can download sample DTS encoded WAV files from Quad Masters. Burn the WAVs in the usual way onto and audio CD.

It should play in your CD player.

PS. re. Janis Joplin Pearl, the files are complete songs.

A superb recording of The Planets is available on the Naxos label both as CD (8.555776SACD) and DVD-A

One of the most dynamic classical recordings I have.

It also includes Pluto composed by Colin Matthews.
