I am taking the family to a villa in Florida in a couple of weeks. Both of my girls are going to be lost with out their laptops and internet.

I know the villa does not have a connection so I wondered with today's modern technology if there was a reasonable way of giving them access. I guess that I will be looking at mobile phone systems ???

Does anyone have any ideas, thanks

Tell them that they don't need the internet and that they, their friends and the rest of the world will get on just fine.

I agree with you but they are on the things 24/7 god knows what they find to talk about.

But I would like to find out what the options are.

You could probably find a local cyber cafe.

Mobile phones based solutions may be pretty expensive to run. You can get GPRS cards and pay £40 a month on something like T mobile for 100MB a month download. Don't know if roaming charges apply on downloads though. But you'd have to sign up for a year I guess.

...But I'd still try to wean them off for a fortnight.

There are a number of places within Walt Disney World where you can access the internet and send emails. DisneyQuest at Downtown Disney and a few places in Epcot too.

This must be a spoof! Get them to write postcards, they might even enjoy it. Holidays are supposed to be family events, not just a place where you go to do what you would normally do at home.

Our IT manager takes his laptop, GPS(?) card etc with him and checks in more than once a day to see that everything is OK. That is sad in the true sense of the word!

I'm off to Florida for the first time in December and rumour has it that there are one or two things to do there. :D

Give your girls a boot up the backside and tell them that a world does exist beyond a computer screen. :lesson:

Failing that, tell them to stay at home where they can surf as much as they want.

I'm sure there's a website where you can buy sim cards for networks local to the places you go on holiday/business to. Surely buying a local PAYG sim would be the better option over using your UK one?

WOW I'm beginning to feel like a bad parent, actually I agree with you about going on holiday to get away from it all and do something different to normal.

We have used internet cafe's on other various trips and that seems to be the easiest solution this time.

    Thanks for the replies.

There is so much to-do in Florida they wont have time to surf the web.

We went for 2 weeks last year and wished we had an extra week......

    So true

In our 2 weeks we did all Disney parks in 4 days straight, Seaworld, Busch Gardens, Kennedy Sapce Centre, some shopping trips, a couple of days with family...

No chance of any time for web surfing. Too bloody knackered!!

Missed out on the water parks and the 2 universal theme parks, treips to alligator country, the Everglades, Florida Keys, Miami blah blah blah.

They'll have forgotten what computers are after all that ;)
