Question Hold, Release and Attack Fine Tuning for Mic

Hey,

I'm setting up a microphone for recording, and im using a noise gate to avoid any noise in between my voice being picked up, breathing etc, and I want to fine tune this. I feel I am close to my sweet spot as I am fairly happy with the audio at my current settings. All I know is, I can not go lower on my hold and release at the same time, as it is starting to cut out my sound, and not reactivate it, even when I start talking again for long periods. Is there a reason for this? Is it that there isn't enough time for it to pick up my voice again after closing? How would I rectify this?

Also, I have found it starts to cut out completely at longer distances away from the mic. I plan on having the mic quite close to me, so this is not a huge issue.

Kind regards,

Nick
